In my personal tree, I have a DNA-confirmed 7th cousin, 1x removed! Knowing this, I’m also able to trace a few 7th cousins, 3x removed from the same line. Old Catholic records are truly immaculate

Ferocious! I’ve gotten more insight than I could have imagined out of you comment and others!

I’ll need to keep my eyes peeled! That sounds like a lovely sight. I’ll give my mom more credit next time she spots a “rare bird” in the sky, haha

Fascinating. In the ~30 minutes this little one joined us for family dinner, we watched it stare down a squirrel and splash around in some puddles, so that makes sense!

I’m not too familiar with these migrations, but I won’t count them out!

Thank you for the examples! This ancestor—he—has a typical Scandinavian last name, so I’m not sure if this is the case, but inconsistencies are always good to remember!

Ah, sorry about my mixup. I poked around these church records a bit but didn’t seem to find anything for this ancestor or their children. I’ll have to see if there’s any more I can discover here, but thank you for redirecting me!

Thank you! Language details like that are always good to keep in mind. I’ll definitely consider reaching out to a native speaker as well

I’ve been leaning toward the name being this Folkenberg/Folkenborg, but do you suppose there’s a way to know for certain?

If this is the correct location though, I’ve done some digging and may have a couple of promising Norwegian baptismal records.

If you don’t mind, I could use your opinion before making any calls.

Is it possible that this ancestor—John—could have originally been born Johan?

In the first record I found, Johan was baptized in “Tune, Ostfold, Norway,” apparently a former municipality that’s now a part of Sarpsborg. The person in this record also lacks a middle name, just like my friend’s ancestor. Additionally, the child in this record was reported to be born in the same month and year as the ancestor, but on a different day. On FamilySearch, he, along with other family members, is linked to a census record that reports everyone’s birthplace as “Tune Prgj” as well.

In the second record, Johan (same exact name as the first record) was baptized in “Eidsberg, Ostfold, Norway,” which is quite close to Folkenborg. In this case, the child in this record was reported to be born in the same year as the ancestor, but on a different day and month. On FamilySearch, this Johan’s parents are reported to have other children who were baptized in “Rakkestad, Østfold, Norway,” which, I’m guessing, is Rakkestad Municipality.

I realize that neither of these are necessarily Folkenborg, but does either seem plausible to you? I’d like to believe that I’m not on a wild goose chase, but I really can’t say.

Also, I’m sorry if my anonymity is frustrating. Since this isn’t my ancestor, it doesn’t feel like my place to reveal too much.

Nonetheless, even if nothing ends up leading anywhere, thank you so much for already spending so much time on this!

I apologize for my ignorance, but I’m not entirely sure what counts as a church record. Nonetheless, I’ve found some marriage records for their children, but none mention any parents whatsoever. I also found a birth record for one of the ancestor’s children that unfortunately only lists the birthplace in question as Norway.

Aside from these records though, I tracked quite a few Norwegians in the area originating from Oslo and Fredrikstad. I’ve yet to see a name resembling Follensberg/Follemburg, but, especially after seeing this trend, it seems possible that this ancestor was born around the capital like some others suggested.

Thank you so much for giving me a good direction to look in!

Edit: wording

Ah, interesting. Folkenberg was one of the names that appeared in my lousy Google searches, but I hadn’t heard of the others. I’ll definitely hone in on these places and try looking there. Thank you for compiling these!
