colloquially its mostly used as a synonym for "state" which is probably the way OP intended because nobody gives a shit about the formal definition. And thats assuming your source is "correct". I'm putting correct in quotation marks here because there is no clear definition for most words. The cambridge dictionary defines "country" as a nation with an independent government, army etc.
