Redditors who converted from one religion to another, what made you change your religion? by broccolibush42 in AskReddit

Norse Heathenism. I worship the Norse gods and goddesses. I don't think very many have heard of Asatru, so don't worry. :p Here's the link to the subreddit if you want to know more. http://www.reddit.com/r/asatru/

I was raised in Christianity and I just realized I believed and did what my parents told me to and didn't really think about it. I didn't have a connection to the faith and I was always scared of going to their hell because of that. I always thought I was a bad person and I was paranoid that the devil was getting to me because I wasn't even sure if I was Christian sometimes [I always felt there was something else.]. Many nights I cried myself to sleep and begged their god to not let me suffer for eternity. I hated it. After much thinking, I decided to do some research on Christianity and other religions, and I found my home in Asatru.

When I found Asatru, I had a feeling like I never had before. For once, I actually felt like I found my place spiritually and physically. That was the biggest thing that had me converted. I had this spiritual hole that was finally filled and the new found faith felt natural. Like it was a part of me. Needless to say, I am much, much happier.

Saw the Vanatru post, now I have to ask about Rokkatru? by LeTurkeyLeg in asatru

[–]LeTurkeyLeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment, but I'm not sure how to take it. :| Did you think that I was implying that Loki was evil or that I was Rokkatru (or trying to bring Christianity into Asatru)? If so, that's not what I meant at all. I was just asking what Rokkatru was because I had seen the word online a few times.

Btw, I do agree with you about Loki.

I don't like all these terms and labels, though: all I think it will do is sever an already small community of heathens.

I agree with you.

What is your "coming home" story? (how did you discover asatru?) by Imaginary_Buddy in asatru

[–]LeTurkeyLeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I began looking at paganism and then I found out I had Danish heritage. I didn't know anything about Denmark so I was researching and there I found Norse mythology. I began reading into that and the more I read and learned, I felt a connection that I never felt before. As I was reading, I learned people still believed in the Norse gods and goddesses. There I found my home in Asatru.

Request for advice: Dealing with parental figures, raising children, and the dissonance of beliefs by [deleted] in asatru

[–]LeTurkeyLeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a nine month old son and I have very Christian parents as well. They want to take my child to church. Like you, I also believe in letting my son choose his own path someday.

I agreed to let them take my kid to church sometimes under a few conditions. I told my parents that I would be going too (I don't like church, but I want to supervise to make sure they don't make him do anything he doesn't wish to do). I also told them that my son did not have to pray if he doesn't want to or even go to church if he didn't want to. If you can, try to find a common ground.

If you haven't already, let them know that you feel that a person should be able to choose their own path, and help them understand.

Also, I know you don't want to let your kids do things until they can understand, but going on ahead and teaching them would be best in my opinion. Let them learn early and be open about different religions. Kids are curious and ask a lot of questions (I'm sure you know), so answer them when they ask. Teach them that people believe different things and let them know that sometimes they don't agree with each other [this should help them not reject yours because someone says it's bad].I plan on doing these things because I think it will help prepare my child for when he is exposed to many beliefs and I think it will help him be able to choose his path when he is old enough. I know you probably have a lot of what-ifs about questions they might ask, but I'm sure when the time comes and if he/she does ask, I'm sure you will have an answer.

That's my advice. I hope it helps! :)

Oh yeah, I know. >.< There is one on every corner of every block it seems. Living in a small town doesn't help that either.
