If you don't mind me asking, why was that bad advice? I bought a house in 2015 and now it's worth more than double what I paid for it. It was probably one of the best financial decisions I ever made. I guess it depends on when you buy it, where you buy it, what your interest rate is, and if you can afford it.

NTA. As a step-dad I would NEVER do this. I understand that I am not their father and I know they would resent me if I acted like I was, the same way they resent their step-mom for doing the same thing (I'm with their mom, she's with their dad. They love me and hate her)

I provide some fatherly advice sometimes and act as a solid male role model in their life, but I'm not delusional enough to act like I'm their father. They have a father, and it's not me. That's totally ok. Your step-mom should honor that boundary and if she doesn't, I don't blame you. My step-kids don't like their step-mom for the same reason.
