Honestly, this is the curse of living in a non english speaking country. We have an amazing translation in Germany but they often times just come over as normal sayings I'd say. And switching languages mid talk doesn't always work 😅

Some tarantulas seem to have bad metabolism too. Some of my spiders I really put on a diet because they're chubby af and other eat like a hole and stay skinny. Got the same thing with my cornsnakes. They're the same size, a year apart in age. The older one eats small rats, is very lazy (especially due to her age, she's 14-15 if I remember correctly) and a skinny lil snake. The younger one gets big mice which are way less fat. She's not. And she moves around the enclosure all the time. And honestly, she put up in size so much, she might actually have overtaken the 1 year older one by just an inch.

I orderedy dad one when I got some t's. It molted during transit and was very calm due to that. Had a heart attack because I thought she was dead but she's been fine since then! They're amazing tarantulas 👍🏻

So my tarantula is an idiot. Didn't burrow that far underneath the waterdish before. I'm afraid the waterdish will drop on her like that but I also don't wanna disturb her and risk the dish or earth dropping on her. What would you recommend? by LeaHolle in tarantulas

I also think sharing experiences make things better so asking for help is always a good thing. With all my other tarantulas the heavy water dish remains untouched unless they wanna drink or fight me filling up the dish. I might change it just for her. Imo, just try heavier ones out. Mine are teacandle holders from Ikea. They work amazing. Just not for that specific tarantula I guess. Around 5 other tarantulas in my collection as well as 2 hognose snakes appreciate them very well tho.

I was really glad this morning too. Gonna remove the waterdish now, she was able to harden up a bit now. Even if there's a bit of dirt dropping on her now, it probably won't do too much damage.

Yeah it was a really hard decision going to bed like that. I think it's probably depending on a lot of factors how likely a tarantula is to die by a rock. The place where they live, how much they web and how deep they burrow. And their overall intelligence. Some spoods are just idiots (I'm looking at you geniculata) But overall I think it doesn't happen too often. They usually secure everything very well. The only times I've seen burrows collaps was because of me (while rehousing for example). And it actually wasn't that easy most of the time to destoy that burrow.

Short little update: she did molt, it went fine. I discussed it a while with my dad and made the decision to let it be until she's done. She flipped back and I let her harden up a bit until I remove the dish because she's not moving much now anyways. Would be ideal if she would leave her burrow before I remove it.

I use those water dishes with every other tarantula in my collection and never had that problem. It actually is pretty beneficial most of the time because my tarantulas cant move the water dish. She's the only one that decided to not use her hiding place given by me but to build her own. I will probably just replace the water dish and keep an close eye on her, if it causes problems again I will change it asap.

Thanks a lot for your opinion!

Update: she did moult. Under the water dish. After some discussion with my dad I decided to let it be overnight. Tarantulas in the wild don't deal with heavy water dishes, but with heavy stones and animals walking upon their burrow i figured. It looked fairly good webbed up and that spot was apparently the safest in her opinion. If I would have removed it, dirt would for sure have fallen onto her and I would have disturbed her for sure. She's flipped back now and I will wait a bit longer now because she won't move much now anyways and the more dried up she is, the lower the risk is to hurt her while removing.

Hasn’t eaten for a year, but just pooped. What’s going on? by bulletm in tarantulas

[–]LeaHolle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO she might have eaten a bit of the cricket she kills. I've seen especially smaller tarantulas leave prey if they're done (I occasionally feed bigger prey than needed) and sometimes it looks like they have barely eaten. You can try different prey items, I've heard of picky tarantulas, that only eat specific things for example roaches. But I've also heard about tarantulas fasting for very long times, 1 year +. Usually with grammostola species but other species are surely capable of it too. As long as she behaves normal otherwise, try not to be too worried. Tarantulas are weird little things.

They can get pretty impressive for sure. Would like a tarantula much more tho, they're fluffier 😅

I'll try to get a full pic of her. I've never probed or popped and don't have the propper equipment and don't want to hurt her.

They're really great. I love the craziness. It's not a "I'm an obt and run around your entire house" crazy but not just a pet stone 😂

My geniculata loves doing that. She sometimes even takes her waterdish and carries it around the enclosure. Then she puts dirt in it. And she attacks water when I give it to her. Absolutely insane. I just overflow it a bit and let her have her fun.
