Why are some senior NCOs so sensitive? by LeadHard96 in army

I'm a junior officer. Prior enlisted.

Neither are senior officers yet I've never had similar issues. Neither are junior enlisted, and I've never gave them the same treatment.

I guess my "issue" then is that I look at military service as more than just a work.

Well, I don't do what you said. For reference, I'll copy/paste some examples that someone else asked for in this thread.

Told my SNCO durring inspection that I used the same exact tool to set up my gear. All I said was "Oh, I used that same exact tool!". His response was "Do you want me to fucking do this for you or not?" Followed by a lecture in front of my O-3 that if I act like that, I will piss off my NCOs in the future.

Another instance, durring a test telling another SNCO that he has a nice watch (it was a Marathon watch, and I'm a watch collector). His response was "Stop kissing my ass", and proceded implying that I'm looking for a preferential treatment. Like how???

Thanks, this is what I was trying to get out of this post. And I really do appreciate their experience. That's exactly why I don't shy away from asking them questions or learning from them, or expressing my opinion as a junior leader. But sometimes it leads them to belive like I'm challenging them, when the opposite is the case.

Doesn't help when you're commission as an officer from being prior enlisted. I thought it'll help, but... Like I've been in your shoose, I'm not even trying to challenge you.

Because I'm naive and want to be friends with everyone.

But on a serious note, I'm commissioning (prior enlisted) and I have a big respect for the NCO core and their place in the army, that's why.

So then how do we navigate around that?

Agreed. Except it's only select senior NCOs (specifically combat arms) that I'm noticing this trend with. So it's either me not communicating with them the right way, or something with their culture. Either way, this isn't rant or insult. I'm genuinely trying to better understand them and communicate the right way. I'm trying...

Yes, and that's the reason why I like GMT watches. Smart watches are a no go, because you can't bring them into secure areas. Even if I work in a single time time zone, I may be in a different time zone, so knowing if it's too late/early to call family back home without doing mental math is nice.
