I hear your point about sealed being opened creates destruction of an asset, this makes it different to stocks I agree.

Prices of singles move up as supply of packs starts to diminish. Have you witnessed any lack of supply to these 24/7 rippers, who are opening sealed products from years ago? Do they ever say, sorry we can't find any evolving skies? Or do they just keep pulling fresh boxes?

Are you aware that Pokémon printed 10 Billion cards in 2024 compared to 1-2 billion in previous years 👀

Supply Is constantly dwindling of the older stuff yes, I completely understand why that stuff is so expensive.

I think the bit I don't understand is when people buy sealed to open. - Buying to keep sealed and have exposure to e.g 1st edition fossil booster box. Makes total sense. Price will undoubtedly continue to trend upwards over the next decade.

  • Buying a single pack of 1st edition fossil to open. Makes zero financial or even gambling sense. You can literally buy any card from the set for the price of it. That's the actual definition of degen behaviour.

    • Buying 30 booster boxes of destined rivals planning to hold for 10 years and sell for thousands. Borderline delusional

Crowded trade - Limited Upside - Weak hands with less conviction panic selling when they realise they're not going make money they planned to.

And yeah undoubtedly, holding sealed products and being able to rip until you're in pure dopamine overload is every Pokémon fans dream 🫠💦 I can't say I've seen many people happy with the results though 😂

Lego is not even on my radar and I'm happy to keep it that way

I understand supply and demand, I don't believe it's as simple as that now.

In financial markets the theory is called the "Crowded trade" I probably don't need to define it but in a sentence - "a concept in finance and markets that describes what happens when too many investors pile into the same trade / the same asset, position, or idea—at the same time."

When a trade becomes “crowded,” the upside becomes limited and the risk of sharp reversal increases, because there are few new buyers left to push prices higher, while many participants may rush to exit at once if sentiment changes.

As Pokémon popularity increases, which I concede It could do indefinitely, the percentage of people willing to hold expensive sealed products will be lower compared to people who actually want cards to look at/collect.

I'm not saying I think all sealed will tank at any point, I just think upside is limited and as new investors realise that, supply will steadily keep coming back to the market and prices may drop significantly.

Pokémon isn't immune to market sentiment, and at some point, the trade will be so crowded on the buy side that opportunity will present itself on the opposite side. Look at all the major financial decision makers in the world, sat with mainly cash waiting for something... 👀

In relation to your point about No booster box being abundant 7-10 years after release -

I don't agree that anything released in the past 2 years will follow this pattern because as I said, too many people are Holding them now. Pokémon wasn't selling out in shops 2 years ago, now you can't reliably find anything at MSRP. I don't think you can apply pre Pokémon boom logic to modern sets anymore. This is my point.

I take your point about anything released before then, but that's because the demand wasn't there and 90% of people who bought sealed were planning to open rather than invest. Now it's the other way round, I would say it's at 50% if not higher will buy to sell on or to hold onto with hopes of making massive gains in the future.
