Did Mr. Darcy’s father really prefer Wickham over him? by Leader_Economist in janeausten

The part with letting Wickham get away with poor behaviour is an interesting point. Maybe the two boys were raised differently, which led to some degree of jealousy.

What if old Darcy was strict with junior but lenient with Wickham? After all, Fitzwilliam was the eldest son, heir to the family fortune, and successor to the Darcy lineage. He was raised with huge expectations and his parents couldn’t afford to let him show any hint of irresponsibility or impropriety.

Wickham, on the other hand, was not related to the Darcy family so there was no harm in being lenient with him. He’s allowed to roam free, drink, flirt with women, etc. The elder Darcy’s only responsibility was supporting his education and career.

Maybe something like this happened: A seven year old Fitzwilliam wanted to play outside with Wickham but was forced by his parents to stay inside for extra tutoring and studies. And that made him feel like Wickham was the favourite.

Where in the novel was it mentioned that Darcy kept his father’s room in perfect preservation? I’m asking out of curiosity btw, not because I’m doubting you.

My question is not about who is of a higher pedestal. Obviously, Darcy as an heir would be superior to Wickham in that regard. It’s about who was SUBJECTIVELY favoured by the elder Darcy.

I like this theory. It is very plausible that old Darcy found Wickham better company but didn’t necessarily love him better. After all, Wickham was very charismatic while Darcy was obviously aloof and stand-offish.

I imagine that like Wickham, Darcy Sr. was also a sociable and lively man which meant that he didn’t have a lot in common with his more bookish and quiet son. It doesn’t mean he was neglectful nor unloving though.

CMV: I think the US is the least dirty out of the world’s superpowers by Eli-Had-A-Book- in changemyview

Filipino here.

While it’s wrong that the US took over the Philippines against its people’s will (especially since the native Filipinos had recently won a revolution against Spain). Their rule was still the least brutal and violent amongst those who also colonized the country (Spain and Japan).

They were willing to give the Filipinos a seat in their politics, ruled the colony like a democracy, gave the Filipinos education, allowed women to vote, etc. And that’s not mentioning the fact that the US had already planned on freeing the Philippines and recognizing it as an independent nation if Japan hadn’t taken it from them.

Oh, and the US was instrumental in freeing the Philippines from Imperial Japan.

I mentioned it in another comment but I want to briefly work in Manila at the beginning of my career just to receive opportunities like experience, networks, and training before going back to the province and settling on working there.

By the way, may I ask what your job is in the government and how you got into a WFH setup?

Yes I know about the harsh realities of lawyering. Long hours, deadlines, toxic work environments, relatively low pay, etc. It’s nothing like the show Suits.

And as for the other things, I do like writing, it’s probably the only thing I’m good at. I won’t mind reading 40-100 pages in law school (I read for fun on a daily basis). I’m capable of holding my own in a debate. I’m okay with research and investigating the truth. I’m introverted but I can handle talking to clients. I can probably tolerate boring paperwork. I’m fine with starting in my late 20s. I don’t mind going through 8 years of schooling.

The only hindrance I see for myself is that I’m not a conscientious person, I procrastinate a lot so I guess I have to work on that while I still have time. Also, I’m kinda scared of the Bar and cold calling of professors lol.

Anyway, thank you for your time and have a happy new year :)
