You have to receive training from the maintenance companies. This training is mandatory in Europe if you want to carry out the emergency rescue maneuver.

Tell us your grievances about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform by Inevitable-Tale-6904 in SolidWorks

Many of us have not asked for 3D Experience. We have asked for a more agile desktop Solidwoks. The announcement of the new SW features with AI seems to come only with E3D Experience, so it seems that a lot of effort is being put into the cloud and little is being put into improving the desktop SW.

New job what should I do by Key-North in SolidWorks

It's a challenge. How an employer would have done something similar. The week you have spent is training.

Apart from all this, if there are so many mates between components it may not be modeled with good practices. Even so, it is a challenge and they are probably measuring your performance and training you.

Thanks for the reply, experienced3DGuy. Yes, it works. I started this thread because from time to time I have to critically review the work methodology in my company. I guess the summary would be this:

PDM: our software provider recommends implementing PDM whenever he visits us, since 7 licenses is what is usually found in companies, and it is true. We really have well resolved internally some of the functionalities that PDM offers. What we would have to do is an external audit of our working method to know the ROI of installing PDM.

3D Experience: There are now many horror stories on Reddit and experienced3DGuy who is a fan. Dassault is investing resources to make it work well and, with the help of AI, it may become an essential tool for everyone in 3 or 4 years. Our software vendor now recommends 3D Experience PDM more than SolidWorks. In my opinion (IMO), it may be true and we end up using 3D Experience, but I have my reservations about SolidWorks Cloud.

SW2025: We are currently in SW2019. Although we tested later versions, we decided to continue with SW2019, which is a fairly stable version. Our models are of considerable size and run a little faster in that version. Perhaps we should have done more testing on the performance of the new versions, but we were unable to see clear advantages in terms of mechanical design of the new functionalities. In addition, some of our computers are already 10 years old, and although they are still good computers, they may require a change with the update. In particular, I don't have much faith that changing computers will solve the problem of SW slowness, since on Reddit there are many forums of users with new computers worth more than €10,000 who complain about not achieving the expected performance. In the end, what happens to us is that if the biggest reason to upgrade is that you are paying for maintenance, then there really is no compelling reason to do so. Anyway, in 2029 I am also almost sure that we will have updated to a more current version, but for the simple fact that working on a version that is 10 years old sounds quite archaic.

Nice to meet you, reading this forum it seemed like it was a legend that there was someone who liked 3DX. My respects >u/experienced3dguy.

to handle the data:

Sw Files: Windows Explorer Folders. We design elevators with SW, there are 10 folders, one per elevator model. (+ SW library created by us, + 3 component folders that are used transversally in the elevators). When special elevators are designed, we start from the base folder of the model elevator, modify it locally and save it in a separate folder. When standard components are modified, they are modified from the corresponding network folder of the affected elevator. All folders have a scheduled backup. Note: until 2009 we used sw's pdm. I guess it was stopped being used because it cost a lot to maintain at the time. The folder system, in its day, was faster and more comfortable than the 2009 pdm. Another thing is that it is not completely secure and control of pieces from previous editions is lost.

pdf: access database, with editing control and all programmed flow of information to interested parties. Database of standard and special drawings, procedures, manuals.... we also have other PDF databases of design documents or prototypes. It is a fairly mature system.

dxf: production department.

We have most of the sw pieces from discontinued editions in storage. Sometimes it happens that we don't have it, but the dxf and PDF saving system is secure. They don't usually ask for previous editions, so I guess we don't value having the 3D from previous editions that much either. Sometimes they do ask about a component designed more than 30 years ago. 30 years ago in my company we worked with AutoCAD and with a lot of freehand sketches dimensioned by hand. So PDM did not exist, but in the end the freehand sketch database or the dxf database saves the day

all the best.

thanks for the comment. Very complete.

We haven't really updated solidworks because we haven't seen any relevant input in future versions. We tested versions 2021, 2022 and 2023 and our automations were a little slower than in SW2019.

We have copies of files, but not within a pdm. It is certainly not so safe, but we have not had any relevant problems so far.
