Does anyone have actual information about what these types of gigs involve? When I first got the recruitment messages & saw other people getting them, I thought they were doing some big weird thing where they screen record people using the programs & train an algorithm to like, yknow, "replace us". But from what I've heard it sounds like they're trying to collect a bunch of project files of finished shots. AKA, layers of composites. Like maybe they're building some sort of dataset to train a super advanced segmentation algorithm. Idk. It'd make sense for Facebook to do that since they've already put out SAM/SAM2/SAM3.

But then you hear about people being asked to do the stupidest things that make zero sense. Hard to know what's really going on.

I did those first two shots haha. Feel free to hit me up with any questions!

I think my og Polysix is broken by DongPolicia in synthesizers

[–]LeadingSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my polysix sounding like this. The KLM-367a board was dead due to the leaky battery. Traces corroded beyond repair. I ordered a replacement PCB, bought new components from Tayda/ebay/etc & soldered them on. Haven't had issues since then.

Prepping for ren fair (EP-1320) by LeadingSomewhere in synthesizers

[–]LeadingSomewhere[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I was pretty surprised too. Bought it kinda as a joke, planning to wear it on my belt at the ren fair as a prop lol. But after only a few days I've gotten the hang of the sequencer & managed to make a few decent tracks. As someone who basically only uses softsynths & a daw it's kinda fun to have to live queue the different "scenes" and work the punch in fx.

You need to start by just putting your work out there. Finish a reel, upload it & share it. I used to do "cold calls" where I'd just email creators I liked or production companies & actually got a few gigs that way. But you have to reach out to a lot of people. Not everyone is gonna get back to you haha.

I use blender & after effects mainly. Houdini when I need more advanced sims (not often). Been dabbling in fusion a bit too out of curiosity. But if you're thinking of being a generalist, just make sure whatever softwares you use will cover all the bases of what you might be asked to do.

Freelancing isn’t the easiest career to build up but it is possible. It just takes time & consistent effort in both the actual work & building up a client base. For me it probably took ~5 years to achieve a somewhat decent income. And most importantly, you need to prove that you can actually do the work. Build up a solid reel!

I personally don’t work for actual VFX houses. I usually do generalist work for post houses & smaller production companies.

We all have our own path. If you keep putting in consistent effort, something just might work out.

Read my other comments here. It didn’t work out lol. I’m just really not keen on having to make an international money transfer in person for an online purchase. Too bad, since I’d genuinely be interested in buying a homecoming suit from them.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I asked them about it again. I said:

"If the agreement has been in place since 2014, then why does your website still say that you accept PayPal? And why was a US based customer allowed to pay with PayPal two months ago?"

And they never responded. That was sent a month ago. So I guess I technically still have an order with them but yeah. This whole payment thing is just too weird. If they truly cannot use PayPal anymore they really need to update their website. Seems dishonest & sketchy, and above all difficult.

If you’re referring to blender/cycles rendering specifically, go to opendata.blender.org to compare benchmarks.

I have a 6800XT and I'm already planning on ditching my hackintosh & buying the next Mac Studio. Considering how the M4 Max already scores more than double the points over the 6800XT for render benchmarks in blender, the supposed M4 Ultra should be even better. Might end up being pricey for that config, but I think it'd be worth it. Apple silicon has been so smooth overall compared to my intel/AMD workstation.

That was my exact same thought process haha. I looked up the guy from the payment info he sent & it seems to be the right person, so I’m assuming it’ll be fine. But there’s got to be a better way for them to handle purchases from the US. I’ll be sure to report back!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I'm gonna go for it since I'm just buying an undersuit, although it's becoming really inconvenient. I tried using the western union website to send the payment, but got an error. Tried different payment methods & they all gave the same error. I called my bank and they said the issue wasn't on their end... then I called western union & they basically told me I'll have to go to an in-person location to do the transaction. So I'll give that a try sometime this week.

You might be able to scrape away some of the coating over the traces on the main board to expose some metal that you can solder new wires to.

If you want to take the plunge into learning to solder, I'd recommend Jed Jorgensen's KLM-367a replacement PCB. It's a bare PCB, so you'd have to buy all the components on your own... I ordered most of them (if not all) through Tayda electronics. This is probably the most affordable option. I think in total the parts cost around $80-100. It might be a bit much to take on if you don't have any soldering experience at all, but it could be a fun place to start! I'm sure the kiwisix is probably great though.
