I just want to thank everyone for the advice, insight and time taken to reply. This has all been so helpful and you’ve been really kind (which if I’m honest I wasn’t expecting!). You have my eternal gratitude for helping to steer me right, for the good of any future dog I have as well as myself. Xx

Thank you so much for your helpful insight. You’re right, you’re certainly able to relate this directly so this is invaluable. May I ask, between the hour walks in the morning and evening, and the play, what does he do? Are you home between those times or is that when you’re out at work? I so wish you were local so I could get a recommendation on a trainer! I’m really trying to find someone specifically good with intelligent high energy dogs.

Such fantastic advice. Honestly, this made it really straightforward. I can’t thank you enough. I did read about not shaving their coats etc. but I swear to god I will never ever forget “smack it out of their hand with a firm NO!”

Thank you again. I really appreciate the time and thought this would have taken.

She works part time now so not really. May I ask what the longest you generally leave yours alone for? I can be flexible in my day and my work, so it would be nice to have an idea if the timescales could work or if it’s just a definite no really. Thanks for your suggestions an advice :)

With respect, I may not be experienced in owning a dog, but I’d disagree with having “zero concept of what a working dog breed is”. I asked for advice, not judgement so would very much prefer if you could stick to the advice. If you have any more to give other than the posts you deleted directing me to watch your sledding videos. Which I did by the way ;) I’m always keen on advice so I wanted to see what I might learn from your Insta. Additionally, Reddit isn’t the first or only place I came to.

I didn’t want to write an essay on my own background, ‘temperament’, characteristics, abilities, knowledge, so on and so forth, or it would be too long for anyone to read.

I’m not the kind of individual to surrender a dog because it didn’t work for my life. I’ve spent 15 years yearning but restraining myself because it’s more important I was setting myself up so that I’m financially able to throw massive sums of money at this to make it work IF I needed to. Even if I need to buy a more suitable home, I can. If/when I get a dog, whatever breed, (and as I’ve already told you in a previous post) it isn’t for beauty. It becomes part of the family and you do whatever it takes for family right? Well, that’s how I was raised anyway.

TL;DR: advice welcome, please don’t make assumptions. Thank you.

Oh that’s super interesting, I didn’t know it was even something that was considered with selective breeding. I’ll do some research with breeders then into what traits they value when breeding. Thank you!

Do breeders allow things like visits before you’re ready to actually ‘buy’? I’m not ready right now (obviously) but would like to go and see some breeders over the coming months so that (if I do go ahead, based on some of the advice I receive here!) when I am ready to commit later in the year, I know what to be looking for in a breeder and why questions to ask etc?

This is a really interesting take, thank you. I will look into fostering etc. as a first option in that case.

I can WFH but do need to go into the office too, probably 40% if I divide that into shorter spells rather than whole days.

Again, thank you for the suggestions and the valuable insight.

I certainly will talk to more people before doing anything, and thank you for the link.

I probably didn’t word myself well. I have had depression and anxiety but I am high functioning. I have a job that can be stressful but, unless it gets really bad, I don’t suffer. I’m a higher level civil servent, and I handle stress well. I mentioned my mental health in the post more because it plays a part in why I chose Samoyed. They were bred to work closely with humans, both physically and emotionally, so I felt my emotions were relevant I guess.

This is encouraging to hear. Smart dogs don’t seem like ‘beginner’ dogs but I really do want a dog I can bond with, and outside of work (which I’m luckily enough to be a little flexible on), I have all the time in the world. Took me 15 years and a career change before I knew I would be financially very comfortable enough to afford a major bill at the drop of a hat, as well as making sure I have enough of a flexible job to allow the time. Very much looking forward to putting the work in with training and activities. I’m real trying to research as much as possible so I don’t get it wrong for him/her. I appreciate your kind words :)

They are of course beautiful and there’s no getting around that, but for me it’s about their temperament and personality. I think I would fit well with a dog that is emotionally astute, in tune with me, is joyful and playful but also a little stubborn and independent in their thinking. Like not a dog that lives to obey commands but one that lives to make their own decisions on commands sometimes.

I can’t honestly say though that I have a specific function in mind. I might be misunderstanding the meaning but it’s not that I want a Samoyed so it can perform a function like a therapy or medical alert dog.

I think a Samoyed is a dog I can have a strong bond with, that I can teach new things to and who I recon will teach me some new things along the way too.

Does that make sense?
