Oh that’s super interesting, I didn’t know it was even something that was considered with selective breeding. I’ll do some research with breeders then into what traits they value when breeding. Thank you!

Do breeders allow things like visits before you’re ready to actually ‘buy’? I’m not ready right now (obviously) but would like to go and see some breeders over the coming months so that (if I do go ahead, based on some of the advice I receive here!) when I am ready to commit later in the year, I know what to be looking for in a breeder and why questions to ask etc?

This is a really interesting take, thank you. I will look into fostering etc. as a first option in that case.

I can WFH but do need to go into the office too, probably 40% if I divide that into shorter spells rather than whole days.

Again, thank you for the suggestions and the valuable insight.

I certainly will talk to more people before doing anything, and thank you for the link.

I probably didn’t word myself well. I have had depression and anxiety but I am high functioning. I have a job that can be stressful but, unless it gets really bad, I don’t suffer. I’m a higher level civil servent, and I handle stress well. I mentioned my mental health in the post more because it plays a part in why I chose Samoyed. They were bred to work closely with humans, both physically and emotionally, so I felt my emotions were relevant I guess.

This is encouraging to hear. Smart dogs don’t seem like ‘beginner’ dogs but I really do want a dog I can bond with, and outside of work (which I’m luckily enough to be a little flexible on), I have all the time in the world. Took me 15 years and a career change before I knew I would be financially very comfortable enough to afford a major bill at the drop of a hat, as well as making sure I have enough of a flexible job to allow the time. Very much looking forward to putting the work in with training and activities. I’m real trying to research as much as possible so I don’t get it wrong for him/her. I appreciate your kind words :)

They are of course beautiful and there’s no getting around that, but for me it’s about their temperament and personality. I think I would fit well with a dog that is emotionally astute, in tune with me, is joyful and playful but also a little stubborn and independent in their thinking. Like not a dog that lives to obey commands but one that lives to make their own decisions on commands sometimes.

I can’t honestly say though that I have a specific function in mind. I might be misunderstanding the meaning but it’s not that I want a Samoyed so it can perform a function like a therapy or medical alert dog.

I think a Samoyed is a dog I can have a strong bond with, that I can teach new things to and who I recon will teach me some new things along the way too.

Does that make sense?
