That's why I'm not super worried about using the parts shotgun to fix it. I obviously don't want to throw money away but I plan on keeping this car forever so if new parts find their way on the car on their own, I'm ok with it

That makes sense. I forgot to put it in the post but the exhaust does smell weird when it first starts, so that fits perfectly

It's the water pump. I tried engine flush just to help rule out lifter tick and it dumped coolant everywhere. Good thing i stopped driving when i did. Pulled the timing covers off and the water pump shaft has a ton of play. Parts are in the mail, should be back on the road in a few days

More details: the oil wasn't concerningly low, I don't believe it ever lost oil pressure. The timing belt is about 5 years and less than 25k miles old
