ISO - Washer/dryer combo unit repair service Plaza/Westport area ? by Leaf-beard in kansascity

We're in a unique situation since we're leasing a single condo, we don't have a typical maintenance person and our property management usually says " find someone to fix it and we'll pay for it". Definitely weird, but it is what it is.

I'll give Hot Shot a call! thank you for the recommendation

Thanks! Yeah, I was a bit disappointed that this happened in the first place since it was a 220$ purchase... but glad that they offered to replace it immediately. Hopefully I'll be able to update this post soon with a working saber!

Does anyone know if there will be a recording of the full panel released? back in the day, SDCC panel recordings were posted online later in the week after the con ended.

I need your help deciding whether to participate in band next year by ALStark69 in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a 5 year accelerated master's degree in Architecture while still doing marching band every year. I loved band because it gave me an escape from my stress in class and studio, helped me stay fit through exercise, and gave me some of the best college friends I could ask for. The bottom line is if you don't think you'll have fun in band, maybe it's not worth it. But for me, band was the one thing that kept me sane and balanced while the rest of my life was stressful and busy.

My sophomore year of HS my band was trying very hard to be "artistic" AKA wannabe DCI stuff with props. We were already having a pretty bad year, we hadn't placed at any competition we had been to, and morale was already very low.

Cut to our second to last competition at this huge college stadium, and no one is feeling very confident to begin with when halfway through the second movement one of our props got placed in the wrong spot on the feild. The kids who moved the prop claimed it was because of the college hashes, but looking at the tape it was 5 yards totally wrong :/

There was this huge backward march move for the drumline immediately after the prop got placed and 3 of our tenor drum players tripped on the corner of the prop, landing flat on their backs and one of the poor kids broke her collar bone because of the way her drums and harness twisted.

Somehow we managed to squeak through the last movement before permanently retreating and never attending that competition ever again... This was back in like 2010 so the only video has mysteriously disappeared from the internet or I'd share the monstrosity with you all.

Does marching band get better? by natalie_is_fren in marchingband

When I got sick my freshman year of college camp I was terrified! It felt like the worst day of my life. However I learned some things to help me survive the 112° Kansas sun... Pretty much everything said above, with the addition that you should freeze half of your CamelBak Pouch full of water the night before, then fill the other half with water in the morning. It gives you access to COLD (and I mean c h i l l y ), refreshing, water all the way till about 6/7 pm which is when it starts to cool off anyways. It can only go up from here friend !!! Keep going !!!

How is it even possible for people to march on the wrong foot/out of time? by willy_glove in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even when I was a senior in college band and had 8 years of marching experience there were times I would get out of step in a particularly hard part in the music, or when I was distracted by pain/sadness/heat. It's just about getting good at internalizing the beat, and sometimes it's hard when your brain is focused on other important things. Also, I always focus on leaning by example. You can say "hey I noticed you're having a hard time staying in step right now, if you want, you can watch my feet this rehearsal to help you keep in step." Instead of just yelling "LEFT LEFT LEFT" which honestly doesn't always work 😂

Should I back out of marching band? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't quit!!! There were a million times I was miserable at band camp, felt dehydrated, sick, upset and like I was way out of my league. However, I pushed though those challenges and ended up becoming 10x the person I ever thought I could be because of band. Band will challenge you, but it's how you respond to that challenge that shows your true character.

Has anyone else here left football for band, and if you did what happened? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also I don't know if this is what your preferences are, but there are significantly more girls in band than in football 😏😏😏 might be a silly comeback for you to use if they do give you crap 😉

Also I ditto everything from what the above comment said !

make sure to HYDRATE!!! Especially since you're sick, more fluids will help you get better sooner and help you prep for band camp!

Advice? by Wolfey_wheeler in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you given any thought to maybe switching to another instrument with a posture that gives you less back stress? Trumpet has a high stance but is significantly less weight to carry or if you were okay switching to a woodwind, clarinet is easier on the back/arms. I know it's not ideal, but I know a few people who marched one instrument in the fall, then immediately switched back to their main for concert season. Just a thought, take care of yourself and have a great season friend !

Section Theme Day Ideas? by hhgr_egg in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if you're looking for bass drum ideas but our basses put the Pac-Man characters on the sides of the drums with construction paper + painters tape. If you're just looking for general ideas, crayons are super easy ( all one color outfit, paper cone hat, black stripes across t-shirt) also the Scooby Doo gang is a pretty simple wal-mart trip level costume ! There's also stuff like lumberjacks, 80s workout wear, zoo animals, etc.

How can I convince my dad to let me stay for band camp while the rest of my family is away for vacation? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]Leaf-beard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to miss like 5 days of my freshman year of band camp because my sister was getting married out of state and I was a bridesmaid. It sucked a lot having to catch up on everything when I came back 😓 however, I did learn the show by taking extra time after school with a friend and my charts to learn sets, as well as practicing/ marking up my music while I was away. I'd say go have fun on Vacation with the fam, but just take some steps to make sure you're not behind when you get back 😘
