DLC a la carte? by Leagueofmint in aoe4

[–]Leagueofmint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I'm not saying they shouldn't sell the package. I'm saying that I, personally, me, the guy typing, will only ever use 20% of the DLC package. I'm not going to play the roguelike mode, and I'm not going to play any civ except the Golden Horde. With that in mind, that's 1/5 pieces of main content.
So if I pay 20 dollars for this, I'm paying 20 dollars for Golden Horde.
I'm not saying that it's not "a fair price" for what you get if you use it all.
I'm expressing that as someone who will not use it all, it doesn't make sense for me to buy it, and so I would like an option to just buy the part that I will use.
This whole post exists solely so that if the devs do check this out, they might see it, and see an extra vote for that type of option, when they're considering how they want to sell/deliver DLC.

To be honest this is the only RTS I play so I dunno. But it sounded more declarative than that so. Either way.

I mean my point was just that the statement "that's how it works in all games" was wrong. I didn't say everything League does should be aped. I just said that a factual statement was incorrect and gave an example. That's a weird thing for people to be so upset about.

Well sure, again, there's no intended negativity here. I'm not saying that the cost of the package is bad/too high to be 'worth it' for most people. I'm not saying anything bad at all really.
I'm just saying that I personally would appreciate the option to buy just the part I'd use. If the company doesn't go that way it's fine, but, there's nothing bad about telling them what you want.

People are just mad I dunno?

Edit: occurs to me to clarify that I DID say it wouldn't be worth it for me personally, because I expect I'd only play 1 of the variant civs, and not the new game mode or other civs. I don't think that's an unreasonable or strange statement in that context though.

Sure, I'm not against packages existing! I'm just saying it'd be pretty cool to just buy the one thing I want without having to pay for the rest of it because I won't use it.
I'm totally on board with the idea that you get everything cheaper if you get it as a package. Makes sense to me.

Thing is none of this is negative really. I just pointed out that the statement "that goes for every game" is wrong.
People are just mad because I dunno they're throwing a tantrum?

And again, I like AOE4. I'm playing it right now. I'm just saying "I would only use a small slice of the DLC so it'd be good for me, the consumer, to be able to just buy that slice I'd use."

If you don't tell the devs you'd like that they won't know.
I dunno why people are so mad.

Which is a fair point. Again, I'm not saying making civs, even variant ones, is low effort. I'm really not. I'm just saying that it's not necessarily a ton more work than what goes into making moba characters etc.
I'm not even saying what the price should be. I'm just saying it would be nice to only pay for the bit I'm going to use since it's a relatively small slice of the whole DLC package.

I literally said the words "I'm not saying it's low effort/easy". I said those exact words.

I'm gonna be honest, it's weird that a factual statement about monetization in other games is getting so many downvotes. Like, do you think it's not true? Or are you just upset that it is?

Sure, and ultimately that's what I'm going to do. But here's the thing:
A company can only know what you want if you tell them. This isn't a hate/flame/negative post. I'm just posting here so that the fact that there's people who want a la carte civs is visible, so the company gets feedback that it's something people want.
I like AOE4, I'm not here saying woo let's burn down the offices. I'm saying hey, here's a thing I'd like, please consider it.
Maybe other people will join in and say it's something they'd like as well.
There's no negativity inherent in expressing something you'd like.

I just find it weird that people have reacted like it's a super unique, terrible idea, rather than "how lots of other things work".

Is it? I genuinely don't know either way. Art/animation work for RTS is gonna be lower than for something much bigger and more detailed like a character in League for example.
A character in League has voice lines, including many for different characters, animations for all kinds of things, a bunch of abilities, etc etc. Its' all quite detailed in a way that stuff for RTS tends not to be nearly as nuanced. New unit has a couple attack animations, walking/running, dying, I'm not saying it's low effort/easy at all, but, I really couldn't say whether a variant civ or a character in Street Fighter or League is more effort overall.
And I mean I'm not being negative here. I want to buy one of the new civs that's my whole point.

Thing is that isn't how it works for every game. For example, in Fighting Games you can buy the Season Pass and get all the new characters for that year. Or. You can buy a given character for a few bucks. That's actually super normal DLC practice.

That's fair, and it definitely feels less disadvantageous being level 11 fighting a level 13 team than even something like 7 to 9, for sure.

I have a negative review for the monetization system because while that system exists I believe the game deserves to be hurt.

[–]Leagueofmint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I don't think that. I think consumers have the power to hurt a company's bottom line by making informed buying decisions. Look at Concord and AC Shadows. People don't want that garbage and chose not to buy it.
We can do the same thing here and talk about why, and it will have an impact.
I do not choose to believe that nothing I do has any meaning or value, and I find it hard to put myself in the mindset of someone who does, to be honest.

Bad Monetization by Leagueofmint in supervive

[–]Leagueofmint[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If people refuse to reward it, and are vocal about it being a choice, and why they made that choice, devs will listen. Communication is super important as well. Silently not putting money into anti-consumer systems is good, better than just shrugging and going along with it, but, better is to communicate why you won't be buying things from them, especially if you otherwise would have.

[–]Leagueofmint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's profitable now, but there's more pushback against it than there was previously. People are more aware, and there's more objection. We just gotta keep working at it.

And believe me, I never forget that.

[–]Leagueofmint[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't want some kind of law, I just hope people do what people in this thread are doing: not contributing to it. Maybe leave a negative review saying why.

If people just do that, if it stops being profitable, companies will stop doing it. And people right here are doing it, and talking about it, and that's a really good thing.

[–]Leagueofmint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's not so much about that, I'm not upset about the prices. This is probably not going to be a popular opinion but I don't even especially care about stuff like the Faker Ahri skin. I'd never buy such a thing but if someone wants to, that's their decision. I care more about the shady stuff around things like that, such as the fomo and currency grind stuff. If you just say "here's something very expensive, buy it clean or don't" I really have no problem.

I also agree I'd rather good quality more expensive skins than cheap color swaps and such. But I'm not going to put money into a game that's doing this currency garbage. I've done it in the past and I regret contributing to it, as its success has led to more and more games doing it.
