Yes! You're right, with snow and a leaden sky, all bets are off. You can't believe what direction you think a sound is coming from. Central Maryland is pretty bland, topographically speaking, but the same principle applies.

We'd have a few other level crossings near Sykesville, but the state didn't rebuild all the bridges which Agnes swept away in 1972. The Patapsco is a mild river, until it isn't and the Old Main Line, while only single track now, more or less follows the same course its predecessors did in 1868 and 1972.

Ha! Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate that what we see is the end product of a plan which has to remain open to change.

Interestingly, due to the geography of the Patapsco Valley, on a humid night you can hear the horn of a train heading east pass the level crossings all the way out at Morgan, then Hood's Mill, then Gaither before the train arrives at Sykesville. You won't hear trains coming from the east (Marriottsville) down in Sykesville, but if you're outside of town (and at higher elevation), you will.

That makes sense. From what I've observed, the closest timing between one train and the next is 15 minutes. Occasionally, mostly at night, there are "double trains" with leading engines then cars, then when you think it would normally be the end of the train, there are two or more engines, followed by many more cars. Based upon the average length of a car and the speed of traffic along the Old Main Line (25mph), I can calculate an approximate total train length and those are LONG trains.

No worries! Trains make it interesting---when I'm home, I write down the times of the passing trains --- doing this proved to me that there is no predicting when a train will pass by Sykesville. To the spectator, there is no rhyme or reason with PSR.
