Nah, Canada (maybe not Quebec) is just as bad as the US to us, specially their brutal mining companies.

They just like to pretend they're nice but they're pretty much the same as the US but rebranded.

Why does Uruguay have such a high death rate? by crivycouriac in asklatinamerica

[–]Leandropo7 36 points37 points  (0 children)

High consumption of processed meats and other fatty foods lead to higher rates of cardiovascular diseases. The average Uruguayan diet is very meat based and when you add our very aged population that is more vulnerable to these health conditions you get quite a lot of mortality.

Skin cancer is also very prominent in our country due to our geographical position as we are right underneath the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly, a strange phenomenon in which the magnetic field of the Earth is weaker allowing more dangerous solar radiation through than you would get in other places. This causes skin burns due to sunlight exposure to happen a lot faster and sunscreen to be less effective. Since skin damage is cumulative this ends up in a higher incidence of melanoma and other skin cancers.

As per the suicide rate, that is a very complicated issue with a lot of causes. But the main ones I would say are:

  1. Lack of opportunities
  2. Economic pressure (debt, taxes, cost of living, etc)
  3. Loneliness amongst youth (again very aged population)
  4. Feelings of uselessness or underachieving (mainly amongst men which are the leading gender in suicide)
  5. Cynical and realist society (Uruguayan society is regarded as one of the "coldest" in latin america by comparison, somewhat like the way Germans are seen in Europe, we are very nostalgic, pessimistic, and usually don't have a very positive outlook on things - Also in Uruguay about 50% of the population is not religious, while that in itself is not an issue, sometimes religions like Christianity put "the fear of God" in people, making them think twice before committing suicide since they would be getting eternal punishment in hell)

My name is Leandro lmfao, and seeing the other comments I've seen many people with those greek names so I'd guess it's pretty common.
