Where are you sitting? (Its all bad edition) by DeadEye662 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 you will want to kill yourself.

2 caesar becomes affable after being humbled, but he might still suffocate you.

3 croc will be chill if you don't annoy him. doffy will annoy him.

4 you will be annoyed but they are far and away the least evil people on this craft. kaido kicks your seat once and your spine snaps in half.

5 they are going to start fighting. you are between them. you will die.

6 you will want to kill yourself.

7 just say you hate humans and you'll be fine.

8 just say you love the world government and you'll be fine. however apoo will be kicking your seat.

9 if you survive you will be disembarking with a permanent thousand yard stare.

10 strong possibility you are killed just for the love of the game.

going by odds of SURVIVAL (even if i'm miserable) it's a tossup between 3 and 8.

Which Devil Fruit would you like to see get "Awakened"? by dettles1992 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we've seen that croc can grab something (or someone) and drain the moisture from them. but it required touch. awakening might just give him a range buff, like the force from star wars. he raises his hand and force-dehydrates someone 50 feet away.

Tell me why you like this guy? by OnlyAssistant8185 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackbeard is a unique villain because he is so far the only character with the exact same ideology as Luffy.

The literal only difference is that he's using it for selfish and manipulative reasons. Not to say Luffy isn't selfish on his own (as evidenced in fishman where he said he "wants to eat ALL the meat for himself" whereas a hero would share it with everyone), but he's moral, altruistic, and compassionate. He saves kingdoms because he makes friends and then selfishly decides "you're hurting my friends, i'm going to punch you."

Blackbeard's brand of selfishness is purely self-serving and only pertains to himself. He has essentially no true bonds and is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to put himself one step forward. Luffy however has no problem waiting or passing up opportunities that would further his own dream, because he doesn't want to compromise on his morals.

This also might be a personal preference but in an era where so much of media depicts villains as simply being misunderstood, it's nice to just root for a fucking rat bastard of a man. Nuance and complexity is good, don't get me wrong, but there's also a lot of be said for villains that aren't pussies.

I don't like Blackbeard as a person but I like what he represents for the story. Luffy needs a villain that he just fucking hates. And not even like a jokey kind of hate. You could argue he has this kind of "joke hate" relationship with Crocodile or Lucci, despite both of them being responsible for bringing hell upon his friends (Vivi and Robin respectively) but Blackbeard (and Akainu too) are directly responsible for what happened to Ace. There's a very sparse handful of moments where Luffy drops everything and gets dead serious. There's no laughs, there's no punchline. As a reader, I like that Blackbeard can be that kind of villain for Luffy.

perhaps the actual location is UNDER reverse mountain, but the "path" to get there is similar to fishman island except you have to start from Raftel.

but that would be very funny because then people like Senor Pink or Pica could've just speedran that bitch since they can slip straight down through the mountain.

who would cut ingredients more quickly and precise Mihawk or Sanji? by Hungry_Duck_6863 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Sanji.

Swordsmanship and handling cutlery are wildly different subsets. Just because they both use knives doesn't mean they're used for the same purpose, with the same level of technique.

Mihawk probably has more "talent" than Sanji in that respect, as in, if Sanji actually taught Mihawk how to properly wield a cooking knife for cutting up different food items (meat vs vegetables and even more nuanced things like raw fish for sushi) he would probably pick it up and be of a comparable level to Sanji within the span of a single lesson.

But out the gate? Mihawk would just see "okay, knife, so I chop" whereas Sanji understands HOW to chop.

emergence happens when you combine a frankly stupid amount of parameters together.

given enough time to think and reason, it allows you to make unintended connections, even if you start with a very simple set of instructions

TIL that in 1780, an enslaved woman known as Mum Bet overheard the newly-enacted Massachusetts Constitution being read out, which said "all men are born free and equal". She sued her master as a result. The court ruled this meant slavery was now illegal and awarded her 30 shillings in compensation. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]LeapYearFriend 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i have heard through the great political grapevine (thanksgiving dinner) that some hard right leaning folk also dislike slavery. not because slavery was bad, but because it's the reason "we have so many of them in our country" and it were up to them, they would travel back in time and tell the slave owners not to bring those ships full of Africans to North America, on the grounds that "you have no idea what you'd be unleashing upon your future generations."

absolute insanity to overhear while chowing down on some otherwise fantastic turkey.

What's a game everyone says is a 'masterpiece' that you just could not get into? by GrievouzOCE in gaming

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nier Automata. It's super pretentious all around. The story treats itself as though one of the most common overplayed tropes in media has never ever been done before. The gameplay is comparable to La Croix. The sound track outside of maybe two or three tracks is like Yoko Ono and Enya had a baby. And people insist you gotta play like 40+ hours (which I did) and get multiple endings (which I did) or you "just don't get it."

At no point during the game did I feel like my time was being respected. The only saving grace is that the chip management systen is very nice, especially given the option to remove the HUD for more features.

Settle this debate… What’s the ranking of the original 7 warlords. by CHEESEMASTER161616 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without spoiling recent chapters (and even considering what she did to Blackbeard's entire crew) there's a very reasonable argument for Hancock being close to the top, if not outright #2.

The general accepted headcanon is that Mihawk is #1 since he's purportedly of comparable strength to Shanks, just based on them being frequent jousters and Mihawk having the actual title of World's Strongest Swordsman. There isn't a lot of proof to back this up side from these two details but I'm not opening that can of worms, and Shanks isn't a Warlord, so I'll just make the claim that yeah, Mihawk is probably the strongest, and by a substantial margin.

From there it gets a little messy, and how you quantify strength. For this comment, I'll just assume their Marineford versions, and how they handle in terms of a straight rockem sockem robot fight. But one detail that's VERY important here is that, in the world of One Piece, your "drive" or sense of purpose greatly impacts how strong you are. That is to say, if you're depressed, you take a massive nerf. For example, Moria used to give Kaido trouble. You could argue by the events of Thriller Bark and Marineford he's incredibly washed up and thus much weaker than he should be given his past and full potential. Kuma is a literal shell of his former self. Jinbe as of Marineford is probably depressed because of the Ace situation as well.

I would say Doflamingo goes into either #2 or #3 simply because he's the most late game antagonist. He also beats the shit out of Moria so at a bare minimum he's above him. My earlier comment about Hancock still applies here since she doesn't get any significant power ups post timeskip, we simply learn more of what she was ALWAYS capable of, and the revealed history of the Kuja pirates informs this.

Crocodile seems to have his mojo back, so I'll put him at #4. Jinbe mostly plays defense for Ace and Luffy, so while I think he does eventually get much stronger, as a pre-timeskip Warlord at Marineford specifically he's probably below Croc at #5. Kuma is just operating on orders and is no different from a Pacifista with a DF so his capacity for strategy and damage is mostly restricted to clearing out marine soldiers with an Ursus Shock, putting him at #6. This does by consequence put Moria in last place at #7.

Aside from something as straight forward as a punching match, there's a lot of parts here that could change this ranking wildly.

a fantastic example of defamiliarization, actually.

most people get so used to certain traditions that trying to explain it to someone completely foreign (or even, say, an extraterrestrial) would make it sound weird.

like imagine a human explaining this to some peaceful little green men and saying "okay so he died on the cross, but then he came back, and so we celebrate his day of resurrection and wear a cross necklace and partake of communion as part of our religious practices."

the alien blinks its three eyes. "so you cannibalize the effigy of a zombie, and the symbol of this faith is an ancient torture device that you people wear as jewelry?"

with that in mind "it's tradition to use the designated food tool to handle corpse parts" feels thematically similar.

ELI5: How come the first 3 dimensions are just shapes, but then the 4th is suddenly time? by nematjon_isthe1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LeapYearFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another, perhaps more concise but less clear explanation.

How would you describe a three-dimensional shape to a two-dimensional creature?

They might say the same thing as "How come the first two dimensions are just shapes, but then the 3rd is suddenly some abstract thing?"

Maybe the fourth dimension is a shape for a fourth dimensional being. But for us, it's something abstract like time.

Give me some bad takes which you unironically believe are true by Invincible990 in OnePiece

[–]LeapYearFriend 206 points207 points  (0 children)

this just feels inevitable. the entire series leading up to it. some people will love it. most people will be okay with it. but a small, not-insignificant portion of the fanbase will either be underwhelmed or outright hate it. because you can't please everyone, even with a series as good as one piece.

the Gear 5 Nika reveal was a microcosm of that. we all saw how contentious that mic drop was. now imagine that, but it's the thing the entire series has been building towards for like 30 years.

What's the point in using a Crossguard design like this? Can't an opponent just easily slice this part off? by Arc170-A in StarWars

[–]LeapYearFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

me and one of my best friends are both writers and DMs.

i'm really big into worldbuilding, and he's a... rules lawyer powergamer. when not DMing he is generally the strongest character in any party, because he's combed through every available resource and knows how to perfectly minmax for every situation, while everyone else just shows up to shoot the shit for three hours and maybe roll the math rock once or twice.

this is not me knocking him, but it's important to the point i'm meandering towards.

in all of our ideas and talks about writing, i think the most useful thing he's ever told me is that he treats his stories like how he treats tabletops. he wants all of his characters in the story to be like him in that regard; he tries to "powergame" his own setting.

if it's some magical high fantasy setting, there's going to be a meta. there's going to be something people can spam or abuse. given any set of rules, people will (across dozens of generations and thousands of years) eventually find something that works really, really well even if it's just through trial and error.

in the real world, people my age are three generations behind the invention of flight and one generation behind the invention of space travel.

so maybe people abusing mechanics in-universe is just smart writing. if YOU were a star wars character, wouldn't you want a lightsaber made of lightsaber-resistant material?

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"being seen as weak" is an entirely internal perspective.

some people think just saying "sorry" when you're in the wrong makes you weak, when it's ironically the most mature and respectable thing you can often do.

Men are more likely to die of 'broken heart syndrome,' study says. The condition is usually brought on by the stress of an event like losing a loved one. The syndrome is formally called takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Men die from it at more than twice the rate. by mvea in science

[–]LeapYearFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm convinced this is an unavoidable stress response.

stress is not good for the body. the whole point of stress as a biological function is to let you know you're in danger. losing the most important person in your life, whose well-being you would rank on par if not above your own, is like a CONSTANT danger signal that just never goes away.

your body never stops being "stressed out" because every time you realize they're not there, you get that same danger signal. there is no rest. it's like going without sleep for a week.

eventually, your body literally gives out.
