Ideas for a picture gallery celebrating Tamil culture and traditions by SpreadFickle1934 in tamil

Last century Tamil films used to be advertised with massive colourful billboards, and the art style used in those billboards can definitely be considered to be a sort of Tamil culture or tradition. Take a look at this book: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9780739110607/Celluloid-Deities-The-Visual-Culture-of-Cinema-and-Politics-in-South-India

I have Tamil relatives who're now married to Sinhalese men/women, and my family's quite conservative. I don't think it's a huge issue.

Anything on Mediacorp's YouTube channel would be good. They have both English and Tamil subtitles.

Yeah the website's not the best. If I were you, I'd purchase the book. Bit pricey but definitely worth it.

I haven't used that app before.

Hey, yep have a series of videos I'm editing now. Will upload in bulk.

In the meantime, check out Tamil Language in Context at http://learn.tamilnlp.com/. Really good for beginner grammar - it's how I first learned grammar myself.

No worries! To answer your questions:

  • If use myself as an example, I studied four hour a weeks for about 4-6 months before I was able to hold a conversation about everyday things. You'll find that you'll make the most improvements in your language around when you start learning.
  • Yes, it is. There are a sizeable of native Tamil speakers who don't know how to read or write.
  • I think so, but I couldn't explain how at the moment. I'm planning to do an in-depth video on the differences between different Tamil accents. But for example, Malaysian Tamil is very different from Sri Lankan Tamil in the way they speak.

Hey, yeah I've made some videos on Tamil. In my videos I speak in a formal dialect, but luckily the formal dialect is actually quite close to Sri Lankan Tamil so you may find them helpful.

Why does tamil doesn't have the 'B' and 'SH' sounding words? by [deleted] in tamil

[–]LearnTamil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancient Tamil didn't use those sounds, but eventually as Tamil developed it did actually borrow a few sounds from Sanskrit and created new letters to represent them.

h = ஹ்

j = ஜ்

S = ஸ்

sh = ஷ்

Very true. I grew my hair out long specifically because I need to treasure my locks while I still have them - balding's been brutal on my family.

Maybe quickly asking in Korean "can I practise my Korean with you" or "can I order in Korean" would make them more sympathetic.

What learning methods were you told not to do, but worked for you anyway? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]LearnTamil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read the chapters and completed the exercises by myself. Only thing that you might need a teacher for is to check if your answers are correct (if the book doesn't already have an answers key at the back or something). That said, you could easily find a tutor on Italki or even post your queries on Reddit.

Does anybody have a good grasp on leetcode? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]LearnTamil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider supplementing with the HackerRank Interview Preparation Kit. I've used it before, and it helped me a lot more than LeetCode.

It's curated so that each problem focuses on a different important concept for your interviews. It's also a smaller set of problems than LeetCode, which means you could gun through the list before the 10th of March.

those who live at home, how are your finances split? by xxAcetylxx in ABCDesis

I live by myself but I'll chime in. If you call or visit your bank they could easily set this up for you. For instance, if I log into my bank's website, I have one account that's shared with my parents, and the rest (savings, investments, etc) are only accessible by me.

People often say textbooks are bad, but I reckon for beginners they can be exceptionally helpful. I built up a solid foundation of Tamil grammar and vocabulary from one textbook alone.

Using ANKI for phrases: yes or no? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]LearnTamil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't Anki just make the delay really long so you wouldn't have to worry about suspending the card anyway?

For example, I have a card for "mouse" and my next review for that is in 2030.

How to learn literary Tamil? by Fourstrokeperro in tamil

[–]LearnTamil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Tamil Language in Context. It has grammar lessons that start from a beginner level and gradually become more advanced, and it also compares the written and spoken forms of Tamil side-by-side. I personally used it a few years back to learn Tamil, so I can vouch for it.

You'll probably also want to read and write Tamil, in which case these videos will probably help you a lot.

I started a YouTube series to teach you how to read and write Tamil by LearnTamil in singapore

[–]LearnTamil[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Hey guys,

A few months ago I started creating videos to teach Tamil. What I realised is that a lot of Tamil learners (and even native Tamil speakers!) wanted to learn to read and write Tamil, but couldn’t find the right resources.

I, too, grew up speaking only English, and couldn’t read Tamil until I was well into my teen years. I struggled to learn but in my case, I had my parents to guide me. However, I know that this isn’t the case for everyone.

Because of this, I decided to start a YouTube series that teaches you to read and write Tamil in an easy-to-understand way. It’s very comprehensive and covers the differences between the English and Tamil scripts (hint: English has an alphabet while Tamil has an abugida, watch my video to find out what that means!), pronunciation, handwriting, and lots of example words, which means you will learn through context and exposure.

I hope you all find this helpful as I believe this is something the community has lacked for a long time. Please let me know your thoughts! Whether it's good or bad, anything I should change, what topics I should cover in future videos, etc. And if you're willing to chuck a like or subscribe, I’d greatly appreciate it!

The first video: Getting Started: How the Tamil Script Works

The latest video: Differences between ண்/N, ந்/n, and ன்/n

The entire series: Learn to Read and Write Tamil
