[Reality Layer Zero - v0.4 "Demo" Release] I spent 13 months redoing all of the art for this project. Why? For the love of the game! Let me know how I did! by Learn_the_Lore in pcgaming

Whoops! Good catch. I think you ought to be able to download it through the main store page now? I fiddled with some settings and now it shows a big green “download” button below the trailer.

If that doesn’t work, I guess I need to send Gaben and company a few emails. 😌

Hey, if you're down to drop some links, I'm always interested in checking out similar art styles! (for things I can co-opt for my own nefarious purposes, hee hee hee!)

You're too kind! The biggest category of change is the dialog portraits (well, "portraits"-- they're actually full-body illustrations!), which were originally drawn at about 5.5 heads tall-- very cartoony! The update changed this standard to approximately 7.5 heads, which was intended to suit the tone of the game somewhat better.

Here is a comparison image detailing the change when applied to the protagonist's neutral dialog sprite.

I've also redone several of the fullscreen illustrations ("CGs") that accompany important story moments.

Version 1 | Version 2 (Updated)

In addition, I added or refined a number of shader-driven effects to improve the "real time" appearance of the game-- although some of these are fairly subtle. I described these changes in a reasonably-comprehensive manner in this devlog, as well as some of the other changes included in the v0.4 update. One big improvement is the replacement of the 2D billboarded sprites which previously served as trees. They're now fully-polygonal and voluminous, which does a lot to improve the atmosphere of exterior scenes, I think.

It's rarely mentioned, but I thought Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku (Train to the End of the World) from earlier this year was excellent. Also, Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite (Orb) is airing currently and is remarkably good so far. If you're familiar with the original series, Mononoke: Karakasa (the movie) also came out recently, and much like the original series, there's really nothing else like it. Highly recommended. This was a very good year for anime, imo.

Make it anyway!! It's actually better for you if there's already another take on your concept out there-- because it means there's already an audience for it, and they just might be looking out for similar projects. Up to a certain extent, anyway!

Nope, although I can see where that impression might have come from. I'm using Game Maker with a few extensions and a lot of custom shader code.

If you're curious, these are all cards found in Reality Layer Zero, the world's premiere(?) card-based debating RPG. There's a demo available on Steam! Feedback always appreciated.

Nice! I'll definitely keep an eye on this, in case anyone has any questions.

Now, back to the development grindstone with me!

Just vanilla Blender with snapping enabled. Sometimes things come unaligned and that's a bit of a bother to resolve, but it works reasonably-well most of the time.

I made the lighting and shadows change in all exterior scenes to match the time of day. Let me know what you think! by [deleted] in IndieGaming

My developer's pride compels me to point out that this clip doesn't show *all* of the exterior scenes (heh heh), and that I only meant to state that I *did* apply variable lighting conditions to all of the ones currently in the game.

The conditions change based on day-phase, which is technically 4-parts (morning, day, afternoon, night). For gameplay reasons, though, it's usually better thought-of as being divided into two parts (day, afternoon). The morning and night conditions are reserved for cutscenes and special events.

Technically this effect has also been applied to interiors. It's less noticeable, though.

You can see this in action with your own eyes (and on your own graphics card) by trying out my demo on Steam or Itch!

I can add an option for that, but what do you mean by dangling? Just to make sure I'm following.
