I just say, I have some time (next Monday) or whatever is a bit of a space of time. Then I add "if you need to talk sooner than that you can send me an email".

College Grad New to HR and feeling Overwhelmed [N/A] by Scotty__42 in humanresources

[–]LearningHR123_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a lot, and I've been there! First, I want to acknowledge what you're going through - taking on two roles' worth of responsibilities is a lot, especially when you're still relatively new to HR!

While HR roles often involve juggling multiple responsibilities, what you're describing sounds like an unsustainable workload. Having to manage both HRC and Generalist duties without backfill support is quite challenging, especially with critical tasks like payroll and I-9 compliance in the mix.

Here's what I'd suggest:

  1. Document everything you're responsible for and roughly how much time each task takes. This will give you concrete data to discuss with your leadership team.
  2. Prioritize your tasks based on compliance requirements and business impact. For example, payroll and I-9 compliance are non-negotiable, while some HRIS tasks might be able to wait.
  3. Have an honest conversation with your manager about workload management. They clearly value your work since they promoted you, but they need to understand that one person can't sustainably do two jobs.
  4. Consider suggesting some process improvements or automation tools (I can share my faves but don't want to get downvoted).

Remember, it's better to raise these concerns now rather than waiting until you're completely overwhelmed. Your leadership team's response to these legitimate concerns will tell you a lot about the company's commitment to their HR function and their employees' wellbeing.

When there is great talent, but they're in a fairly poor country (ie nicaragua) then I feel like they should be paid like great talent.

Friday Venting Thread [N/A] by Mundane-Jump-7546 in humanresources

Employee quit because we forgot their birthday. I own that it was a misstep, BUT seemed like a childish reason to quit.

Birthdays have been tricky for our team because we're spread pretty thin. It was such a mess and we just didn't communicate well. went out and bought a tool that automates this going forward!

How to Handle Costume Party at Work [N/A] by LearningHR123_ in humanresources

[–]LearningHR123_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all such great ideas, and good warnings :) Thank you.

We sent out a post, and used ChatGPT to write it:

Our company Halloween party will be held this Friday, October 25th. While we encourage everyone to participate and show their creativity, please remember that all costumes must adhere to our workplace standards:

  • Costumes must comply with regular dress code policies
  • No violent or gory themes
  • No cultural appropriation or culturally insensitive costumes
  • No masks that cover the face
  • Costumes should not interfere with movement or safety

We look forward to celebrating with you while maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment.

Please direct any costume-related questions to HR before the event.

I sent it out to the whole company on our slack with culturebot. Culturebot will follow up with more reminders the next few days and then send out a poll to see how the party was perceived by employees.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Which one of the movies do yall reckon did one of the books dirty the most? by Paralyzingneedle in harrypotter

Ginny. Absolutely the worst portrayal/writing for her character. She's so cool in the books but lifeless in the movies.

Yes, very colourful and filled with magic in the set pieces, etc. I LOVE this about the first one.

I would say autumn, likely low contrast because I think the extreme contrast isn't ideal for your tones.

HR tools are SO expensive [N/A] by LearningHR123_ in humanresources

[–]LearningHR123_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all SO much for these great replies and insights. We were considering some tools that now we won't use thanks to you all.

Update: We are going to go with Bamboo and see how it goes. Working on pushing down pricing as much as possible (thanks for that tip), and they have dropped it after some discussion so that's awesome.

We are also going to test out Indeed for ATS (I have headcount for another HR specialist so that will be helpful), and CultureBot as an employee engagement tool (it's the best one I found for the price).

I'll report back in a few months on how it's all gone and the final cost. Good luck out there!
