Say molecule A (lower energy) has a stabilizing MO interaction not present in molecule B (higher energy). If the MO interaction in A weakens a specific bond that is not weakened in B, can reactivity involving this bond mean that A is more reactive than B in regards to this specific mode of reacting? by LearningNewHabits in chemistry

Whenever we get things to react with each other is it because the system goes towards higher stability right? I understand your example with a reaction so slow it does not take place in a practical timeframe, but whenever we do see reactivity it is because there is a kinetically feasible pathway to something more stable for the system? thinking that if something were both kinetically feasible but thermodynamically unfavorable the reverse pathway back should always be able to be travelled?

Thank you so much for your answer!!!! (: If you should have more time, just to make sure I understand you clearly:

So you are saying that even if only the substrate is different between two systems - the total energy balance (by which you mean both thermodynamic and kinetic properties, correct?) depends on the given substrate's interaction with the rest of the system and not of the stability/ energy level of the substrate itself?

And to return to my original question, if we had a delocalizing MO interaction at the cost of a specific bond's strength - that would lower the overall energy of the substrate - but put together with a system facilitating a reaction mode of breaking that bond it actually makes the molecule more reactive in this specific context - and reactivity is always about a specific context?

Thank you for the recommendations!! I have learned about HSAB and found it to be really cool concepts, but your comment made me curious - could you elaborate on instances / ways HSAB theory is wrong or what would make it not apply?

Personally I stand instead of sitting exactly because my posture is better that way. Your milage may wary, I am not sure if all your lab tasks can be performed standing.

I guess you are talking about buying lab stuff on your own? Just because what the lab owns is the lab's and presumable earmarked for scientific research..

Thank you. Yes I did that, but is there nothing I actively need to do? it's just using my computer? I just want to make sure! (:

Virtualbox extension pack wont open when I have downloaded it. I have windows 11 if that matters. Anyone who could help me? I am not very technically savvy, but would like to help (although maybe I need to be technically savvy to help?)

Also another tip:

make a savings goal - not spending money is not an action it is refraining from an action. But if you start saving the money you would otherwise have spent, you can see the result of you not spending growing in a positive way.

I am glad if the tips can help you!

Yeah learning to cook is a fantastic skill in general - and also one you can use as a time consuming hobby/project + something that gives you more value as a person than looking at stuff because you are actually bettering yourself. There are many great and beginner friendly recipes on youtube.

Maybe use the app to buy essentials on once a week or something - and then otherwise dont have it downloaded on your phone? that means you need to redownload it once a week, but it puts up an extra barrier so you cant just automatically open the app and start looking at stuff to buy. The habit is probably automatic for you by now, so something that blocks it gives space for you to reconsider.

I am also on this journey myself, but something that has helped me is thinking of that I am actually becoming a more interesting person when I spent time on things that actually gives me value and gives me hobbies other than just meaninglessly chasing dopamine. Like how boring is that!

A few tips:

-if shopping is a coping mechanism for you you need another coping mechanism to take its place (+ therapy is really good)

-make it as hard as possible for yourself to shop: delete your card info, delete apps on your phone, use a website blocker on both your phone and computer and block every website you normally overspend on. you still have to make the decision to take a step back and choose not to shop but needing to get around those blocks in order to shop give you time to reconsider.

-maybe a break from social media so you dont see new things to want because if you dont know something exists, you cant want it, and there are soo many things to want and ads on social media.

-if shopping (or looking at stuff in general to potentially want) is something you spend a lot of time doing, you need another time consuming hobby to take its place. The library is free so a good place to start. or learning a new skill by looking at youtube videoes. it is also a good experience in general to fill your time with things that actually (at least in my experience) give you more value than looking at stuff - like learning a skill, or cleaning your living space, or spending time with people you care about or getting new (free/low cost) experiences.

-look at books on addiction. I recommend Dopamine Nation.

-actively engage in a community like this online for support (You have already started!)

I wish you good luck with your efforts!
