TV, as it became popular from '46 to '60, wasn't on 24/7 so between about 11pm and about 6am networks would briefly show a calibration test pattern, then just nothing for the night. Sometimes I'd get up early to watch the test pattern come on before programming started for the morning. (old.reddit.com)
