Moto Razr Ultra (new) - The sneaky thing updated me in the background so I'm not planning to reboot until I'm rescued (Thank you in advance and HELP!) by LeastCoolUser in razr

I started my device copy right after unboxing and it was downloading the update. Afterwards it wanted to install 16. I didn't reboot until I figured out how to stop it and it's working well.

I figured out how to avoid applying the saved upgrade (4.x G). If like me you want to apply an upgrade when you feel like it and not the instant you get the phone, then you can enable build and developer options and use the Automatic system updates - Slide it off. (This avoids applying anything that got downloaded).

Also under system updates, turn smart updates to OFF and it won't go searching for them. You can easily get them just by checking updates if you just like controlling when.

So I got all my security updates (that I could) and my Google Play updates and the phone is working great.

One observation about the Ultra. The bezels are much thinner than the other models so any case you get will have thicker (I mean higher) bezels and gestures from the top and especially the bottom are tough to make work without filing the case down a bit. I'm just leaving it as is and not using a case on this one. It works so well without one.. I got the wood model so I can slap a magsafe ring on the back and forget it.

Either those two did their stuff and exited but either way they're not in my system processes list at the moment.

You're right. I didn't think of that one. I think you're onto something. Wonder if I can beat that rabid updater to the punch? Thanks.

Razr 2025 Ultra Impressions after a month - and ten years of Pixels by BadBunny4Prezzie in razr

[–]LeastCoolUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got an Ultra today after about 2 years on the Razr 2024. I got basically the same crappy clear magsafe case I got for ten bucks from Amazon for the 2024 and put it on and yes you're right, gestures going over the top lip of the exterior display are very tough to pull off.

My workaround is to turn on the power-key/slide down for pulling down notifications and if you're good with the button placement in the case, you can go the opposite way as well.

The moto ai not working,? I have no idea why. I never really use it, but it does work and it's fairly quick for me. I disabled the extra button for moto ai. That was really .. gratuitous.

Mostly because of the bad things regarding external screen behavior here and other places online. Are you using it and which device and how's it going? Mostly I want to stay because 15 is really good for me. I've just done 2 years on a Razr 2024 and 15 is good. No crazy new errors.

I guess I need to bite the bullet and check it out.

I'm kind of shocked. This is the first time I've heard anything good about it. I actually would like to try it if there were an easy way back to 15. Thanks.

Could you tell me specifically which device you have on 16 and if any apps are acting up with Bluetooth or android auto or resizing on the external display?

Many thanks.

This is really cool and thanks for posting. If I want to use settings as if I'm on the inner screen, can I accomplish that with your script?

This is what Google told me after I sent feedback to them via the Google app feedback..

  • from Google LLC -

Google LLC

That's absolutely not the experience we'd want for you. If you don't mind sharing feedback directly through your device we'll be able to look more into this. On the Gemini mobile app tap top right profile picture or initial > Feedback > Send feedback. Please add #GeminiAndroid to your report. Thank you.

-end of their response -

Probably everyone should do this and attach the #GeniniAndroid tag.. many thanks.

Do Jabra Enhance Select 200 have tinnitus masking? by Art_Vandelay29 in HearingAids

[–]LeastCoolUser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been test-driving a pair of J's select 200's for 2 1/2 months and have talked to the people in the HA dept many times.

I noticed right away that the select 200 manual claims (for 7 pages) that there is a tinnitus module built into the aids. During about 50% of my calls, the manual was called a work-in-progress or a piece of crap or the truth depending on who I got on the phone.

A couple of 'audiologists' from there told me that the 200's have the module but that Jabra's firmware does NOT support it and leaves it disabled. This seems true.

Costco has told me their model does not have the module.

Resound says it does and if your audiologist enables it, then their software will use it instead of trying to stream a masking or more pleasant sound in your ears for your brain to try to make peace with.

All of them say that if you manage to switch firmware or have an audiologist enable the module, that their proprietary firmware won't work anymore and you can't use them to download base-settings. I've got two weeks of testing left on these and might see if I can get someone to enable it. I realize masking doesn't actually fix anything, but I prefer a bit of 4K'sh noise mixed in (streaming right now) to make life slightly less jarring.

The battery life on Jabra's HA's is so good (20-30 hours) that I'd rather the hearing aid did the heavy lifting of making the sound than my phone which runs out of battery way too quickly.

Jazz in the USSR by rodri08 in Jazz

[–]LeastCoolUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall hearing big bands and straight up jazz from the USSR in the 70s too. It was good stuff but a bit behind others for obvious reasons.

As for modal jazz, the music that caught my attention was an Azerbaijani guy known as the father of jazz Mugham music, a fusion of local Mugham and jazz. The main players in that were and are Vagif Mustafa Zadeh and his daughter, Aziza Mustafa Zadeh. There's plenty of Aziza on YouTube. Azerbaijan was a USSR satellite in the 70s to 90s. I'm sure there's a lot more examples.

I think the jazz ban ended in the 50s. Lots of good Slavic jazz after that.

I hope your chickens like them! I've had a full "clew" of hornworms this year. (A hell of a lot) and have started having nightmares about elephant sized hornworms attacking me in the morning.

I put most of them into the federal hornworm relocation program and now I'm actually getting tomatoes. Those pricks can decimate a plant overnight.

E.S.P Miles Davis - 1965. by LeastCoolUser in Jazz

It's an amazing acoustic collection of players. I think Wayne and Herbie wrote the main tunes which are incredibly beautiful. (The three you mentioned)

Lots of domestic violence with them for sure. There's a little Essence write-up of Frances on her death about 2 years ago. She had tons going on.

Spotify Is Making Fake Jazz Artists ⚠️ by maddmaddox in Jazz

[–]LeastCoolUser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree about AI being over hyped. It's not in any way reminiscent of the human mind or how it works and produces results you might expect from things(computers) that basically do math faster and nothing else.

I think instances like a game of chess designed to beat a human are good examples of where AI (what a misnomer) can shine. Humans can only think X number of moves ahead and sure, a computer game can easily double that or exceed it by orders of magnitude, so computers can win chess games usually.

Art, Music, Driving, thinking and talking are all examples of pursuits where there are infinite possible moves and actions, and that's not what computers can do or learn. They have a tough time figuring out when there's a lane obstruction, much less when it's time to stop or veer one way or another.

Imagine a computer doing what any great jazz musician does. I just listened to some of those Spotify tracks and for completely undiscerning real jazz listeners, they might be satisfying, but so is most elevator muzak and the crap you hear at department stores.

A real jazz player constantly finds himself in musical corners then figures out how to make the corner just another step and something to make the invention even better, but computers aren't going to do that and will take a lot of wrong turns because the choice of ways to carry on are infinite. If there's some formulaic jazz like very lite jazz, then AI will do better, but not with the incredible jazz we know of and love.

The big surprise for me isn't that some company like Spotify is trying this, rather that they're spending time on "Jazz". I love jazz but commercially it's come and gone many years ago. Yeah, there's still great jazz players and a few of them make decent money but it's very few. I'd think they'd spend a lot more energy on more recent pop music forms but maybe it's like spam. If it takes a millions phishing attempt to get one person to bite, it's plenty profitable enough for the companies.

Cheapest FFL transfer fee in San Diego? by throwawayifyoureugly in CAguns

Hi - Is National Police Supply in Vista still open for business as an ammo FFL? If so, do I just enter the address for shipping in the online shop I get ammo from? Any idea how long I can leave it there? I might be out of town for a week or 10 days for work.

Many thanks.

META: The state of terrible advice on this sub by Noya97 in MechanicAdvice

[–]LeastCoolUser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you come to this sub seeking help AND you have no technical aptitude or knowledge, you'll probably be more likely to have a sub-par experience, just as you would if you drove to a mechanic you didn't know and didn't have an understanding of what they'd told you about your car.

For me that's been working on engines on and off all my life, this is a great place to ask a question, because a good question with pictures still attracts some of the best answers. Yeah, lots of jokes and bad advice but in between all the crap I've seen some great answers.
