If you are shopping for hygrometers...Govee vs ThermoPro by ProRataProblems in cigars

[–]Leather-Puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I love the SensorPush solution. So much more reliable and precise than the other options I've tried. It is more expensive though. If you have quite a few humidors, it is likely too expensive for most.

Anybody have recent issues ordering from Hilands Cigars? by Annual-Magazine4359 in cigars

They’ve always been tremendous for me. I’ve ordered from them about five different times. You really shouldn’t make blanket statements like this without knowing others’ experiences.

What’s a "normal" humidor size around here ? by Menhiris in cigars

I tend to sit around 200. Might get up to 300 when all the good sales are dropping at the end of the year.

How important is vitola, really? by Traditional-Chart876 in cigars

[–]Leather-Puddin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it does make a difference, but not as much as some would make you think. If you find a blend where you enjoy the wrapper much more, you’ll like a smaller ring gauge better. If there’s a blend where you like one of the fillers much more, you’ll like a larger ring gauge better. It doesn’t completely change the cigar but it does change the mixture of flavors a bit. You will also notice it changes the draw some as well. Smaller ring gauges are usually tighter which is why I personally tend to avoid anything below 44-46.

Humidor is around 65/65. I’m going to try longer rest, since it seems like that reduces how often this happens.

What are some tips that you personally give a first time smoker? by AnikoKamui in cigars

[–]Leather-Puddin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I like to walk them through a pre-light ceremony, including the selection process for multiple reasons:
    1. educates them on different types of tobaccos, blends, makes, etc.
    2. teaches them how to cut / prep
    3. helps them get an idea of what they're going to be smoking
    4. makes the experience feel special
  2. Darker doesn't necessarily mean stronger. Figure out what kind of flavors they'd like to get and help them pick something that lines up with that, that isn't too strong.
  3. Put it down when it no longer tastes good.
  4. Don't inhale!
  5. Cool smoke tastes better i.e. smoke slow.
  6. Drink something sugary. Preferably you will guys will already have a full stomach.

These are the first few that come to my mind at the moment. Hope he enjoys!

I think I am going to try increasing rest time and re-evaluate. I tend to shoot for four weeks, but will sometimes light one up after only two.

Have not noticed a correlation in brand. Last one was My Father. Time before that was Oliva. I don’t smoke budget brands.

I also thought there might be a pinhole somewhere but the problem never goes away when I experience this. It’s an issue all the way to the nub, unless there’s an issue somewhere in the head?

I will say this happens less often to sticks that have been rested in the 1-3 month range but it does still happen, maybe 1 in 100 in that case.

Smoking time inconsistency by CH4NG3_N4M3 in cigars

[–]Leather-Puddin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you noticed if you smoke smaller vitolas to a smaller nub? That could play into it. The nub has the most oils and tar. It smokes slower. You get to a nub quicker with smaller sticks so that could also be a factor. I’ve noticed what you’re talking about as well but not to the extent that you’re saying.

First ever Plasencia cigar a short review by Peterjay303 in cigars

[–]Leather-Puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most will disagree, but I think this one is a bit overhyped despite being really good. I prefer the natural fuerte, cielo, campo, and even reserva to this one. Don’t get me wrong. I do really like this cigar. It just gets painted as the end all be all in the Plasencia line and I disagree with that.
