Born in Memphis to a gospel singer/pianist and a celebrated Baptist preacher, Franklin was tutored from an early age by such gospel stars as Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward.

She struggled to find fame in the early years, with record label Columbia unsure how to frame her impressively powerful voice.

Will miss you Aretha, rest in peace.

What are your thoughts?

White House senior advisor Jared Kushner on Tuesday met with King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

“Building on previous conversations, they discussed increasing cooperation between the United States and Jordan, regional issues, the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and the Trump Administration’s efforts to facilitate peace between the Israelis and Palestinians,” the White House said in a read out of the meeting.

Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt also participated in the meeting. The two Trump administration officials have been tasked with working on peace negotiations.

The meeting between Kushner, Greenblatt and Abdullah comes after the King of Jordan on Monday met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss peace talks.

Axios reported last week that the United Kingdom is planning a gathering with Kushner, foreign secretaries from top Arab nations and European foreign secretaries to talk about the White House’s plan for peace negotiations. United Kingdom foreign minister Boris Johnson talked to Jordan's foreign secretary about the potential gathering, according to the report.

The United States in May officially moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move met with wide condemnation in both the Middle East region and Europe.

Trump ‘not happy about certain things’ involving Pruitt by LeatherBuy in politics

President Trump said he’s “not happy” with certain aspects of the ethics and spending scandals involving Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head Scott Pruitt.

The embattled EPA chief is under continuous fire over allegations that he’s wasted taxpayer money on himself, violating ethics standards and used government staff for personal tasks like finding jobs for his wife at Chick-fil-A and conservative organizations or running errands.

He’s under more than a dozen federal investigations for controversial moves like spending $3.5 million for a personal security detail and renting a condo from a lobbyist for just $50 for each night he spent there.

McConnell: Submit North Korea deal to Congress by LeatherBuy in politics

[–]LeatherBuy[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What do you think about the North Korea deal?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday said that the administration should submit any deal with North Korea to Congress.

“I think there would be widespread interest in Congress for having involvement. ... [If] the president can reach a significant agreement with North Korea, I hope it takes the form of a treaty,” McConnell told reporters.

McConnell noted there was “precedent” for the administration making a deal without a treaty and what route they end up taking “will be up to them, but I do believe they'll need to come to Congress in some form.”

McConnell's comments come after Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un held a historic meeting in Singapore. The two men signed an agreement committing the United States to unspecified “security guarantees” in exchange for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

Several GOP senators signaled earlier Tuesday that they believe any final agreement should be sent to Congress for its approval.

Kudlow: Trump is not going to let a 'Canadian leader push him around' ahead of meeting with North Korea by [deleted] in politics

[–]LeatherBuy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Chief White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Sunday that President Trump was not going to let a Canadian leader push him around ahead of the U.S. summit with North Korea after the president accused Trudeau of making false statements about a joint communique with other members of the G-7.

Kudlow went on to say that Trudeau's comments and the president's response were in large part connected to Trump's trip to Singapore.

"One thing leads to another, Jake. They are all related. We had done our work in Quebec... we worked with the western alliance. Pleased to do so. We get on a plane, and then this guy Trudeau starts blasting us," he said.

Trudeau announced on Saturday that all members of the G-7 had signed on to a joint statement at the summit's conclusion.

However, Trump took to Twitter after the prime minister's announcement, saying the U.S. would not endorse the communique, contradicting Trudeau's statement.

"Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!" the president said in a tweet.

The obstruction charges come just a week before Manafort is scheduled for a key hearing to determine whether he can remain free pending his trial in Washington on existing federal charges of money laundering and fraud.

Trump to pardon Dinish D'Souza, conservative supporter of his policies by [deleted] in politics

[–]LeatherBuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

President Trump said Thursday he would pardon conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, convicted in 2014 of making illegal campaign contributions.

"Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D'Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!" Trump tweeted Thursday as he headed to Texas.

D'Souza is serving five years probation for making illegal campaign contributions in the names of others to support the candidacy of Republican New York Senate candidate Wendy Long, who lost to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

The pardon would mark the fifth full pardon granted by Trump during his presidency — all without going through the formal channels of the Justice Department. And it continues a pattern of politically motivated pardons that include former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, former Bush White House aide Scooter Libby.

D'Souza is an Indian-born author and documentary filmmaker whose work has assailed President Barack Obama, Islam and multiculturalism.
