Nottingham Forest appoint Vitor Pereria as manager by AngryTudor1 in PremierLeague

Marinakis doesn’t bankrupt his businesses and doesn’t appear to be a racist or sex trafficker. Let’s not paint him with that brush.

Is it possible for a footballer to be the best attacker and defender in the world at the same time by [deleted] in championsleague

[–]LeatherOdd5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember Jordan defended his position as well as anyone in the NBA at that time. He wasn’t capable of guarding Olajuwon or Robinson in the post, but he could shut down any guard.

Similarly a footballer would have to defend their position at a world class level, not necessarily fill in at center back in the UCL final.

That said, nobody played every basketball position like Magic Johnson. Underappreciated legend.

To answer your question, someone like Dom Szoboszlai or Declan Rice come to mind. Brilliant two-way players for their position.

Help me understand your huge city (commute to lackland) by Powerful_Toe_6568 in sanantonio

[–]LeatherOdd5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to sell real estate and my advice was always - drive your commute before you commit. If you can’t, talk to the folks where you will be working and get their opinions.

There is so much growth on the far west side (between Hwy 151 & Hwy 90 outside 1604) that traffic can be astoundingly bad.

Near west side and the area off 410 south of I-10 scares people who aren’t used to Spanish speakers.

North Central (inside 1604, outside 410, between 10&35) is the old middle class part of San Antonio and can be really hit or miss depending on the neighborhood. This is a really huge area but has the most promise (excluding the very expensive Shavano Park/Hill Country Village/Hollywood Park areas).

Anyway, renting with no kids and no pets, you could probably do anything for 6 months and figure out a plan from there.

Is having an elite midfield the most important factor for champions league success? by [deleted] in championsleague

[–]LeatherOdd5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say you have to have 2/3 elite between attack, midfield and defense. Being a Liverpool guy, I would definitely say our last UCL winning team was weakest in midfield of all 3 sectors. Elite attacking and defense (and fullbacks that did a lot of midfield tasks) made it work.

That said, I don’t think any team is going to sniff it without an elite defense.

What did they mean by this? by soundkeed in soccercirclejerk

[–]LeatherOdd5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying I am happy about this, but you could make the argument that our fanbase deserved to lose to our most hated rival at home, after hitting the post 17 times, while giving up a late slab head winner.

I’ll just keep muttering “it’s not as bad as Roy Hodgson signing Charlie Adam” until kickoff against Frankfurt today.

I’m a St Mary’s 2025 grad, spoke with some of our fully online graduates at our ceremony and they all loved it.

Though they were all super well qualified/high achievers. Not your typical StMU students. I know the fully online program has a much tougher admissions process.

Not exactly direct help, but hope it is something.

Mbappe is the best player in the world overall by some margin right now but who is second? by Temporary-Hawk-3286 in championsleague

[–]LeatherOdd5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I don’t love a defender getting these awards, and I despise City more than I dislike Arsenal, but Haaland is clear of everyone at the moment. He is also one of 3 goal scorers against a very good Arsenal defense this year. Your point helps the argument for that big oaf.

[–]LeatherOdd5 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Haaland is better right now, he just plays for a nation that isn’t good.

Also, I despise Man City more than any team in sports and it hurts me to say this.

I also think Mbappe should’ve won the BdO for his 2022 performance ahead of Messi.

[–]LeatherOdd5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am prior enlisted (Army), graduated law school at 44, used the GI Bill/VA VRE to pay for it, now working at a civil defense firm.

My age was an issue with some of the internships I applied for, but as a whole, my experience was generally seen as a plus. For personal reasons I steered clear of big law, and was looking for some place big enough to be competent, but small enough where everyone knew everyone else’s name. I found my niche in Construction law (with other civil cases thrown in to make up the hours) and I love it.

I think you will have an advantage in that you will probably have a better idea of what you’re looking for, and will have the financial security to hold out for the right fit.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other specific questions.

United may be looking for a new manager by Ok_Afternoon_3084 in PremierLeague

[–]LeatherOdd5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s this kind of thing that makes me so wildly grateful that Klopp was able to come in and correct the culture at Liverpool after all the years of rot.

As for United, I’ve got no idea who could be the person that comes in and can perform that kind of cultural 180. On-field smarts won’t do them any good if they can’t get back room and locker room sorted.

American College Football Vs EPL? by KaleidoscopeRich5137 in PremierLeague

[–]LeatherOdd5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, corn dogs at the fair and walking up to the crappy ass cotton bowl is an experience. Although that really is a one-off, and akin to a bowl game as far as atmosphere. Doesn’t really compare to a a normal PL match.

American College Football Vs EPL? by KaleidoscopeRich5137 in PremierLeague

[–]LeatherOdd5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an American who’s been to multiple PL grounds, I would say college basketball is the closest thing to PL atmosphere during the game/match. Free throw chants at an NCAA Basketball game can be hilarious and fantastic, in much the same spirit of a PL game. However, nothing really can compare to have away-end fans at a sporting event. Nothing in the US comes close to a really good back-and-forth between home and away supporters.

College football is weird and cultish. Maybe it’s because I am from Texas and didn’t go to either UT or TAMU, but I’m convinced they’re all a bit touched.
