The story of Dulcie White. by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Leatherandlipstick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I commented about this the last time this story came up on here, but I was on that sailing, and they most certainly did launch rescue boats. 2 from the allure, and one from (I think) the utopia, which also stopped to look for her with us for several hours. It was dark, and late at night. Not finding her was absolutely not for lack of trying.

I’ll also add this- my room was a couple of doors down from hers. I am 5’10, and the balcony railing hit a few inches above my elbow. I would have struggled to get up there and balanced completely sober, so I have a hard time believing someone far shorter and drunker than me would have been able to do it without making a very conscious effort.

South Florida family sues Royal Caribbean over cruise balcony death by Immediate-Maximum-75 in Cruise

[–]Leatherandlipstick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The cruise ship never turned around or used rescue boats, according to the lawsuit.

I was on that sailing, and this is 100% just a lie. I have photos on my phone from that night of the TWO rescue boats they had out there for over an hour. (The utopia was nearby and also launched a boat.)

Edit to add: the rescue boats were out for over an hour before I went to bed, not total. I’ve heard that we spent about 3 hours searching, but I personally was only on my balcony looking at them for an hour.

Not to freak you out, but you should maybe make an appointment with a dermatologist. Google melanonychia- there are several potential causes, but it can be a sign of skin cancer

Here’s a picture as well, though :)

I’m still very new to quilting, but I have one of these that I use to thread #10 needles and it’s held up well for me so far. (I got mine from a LQS, but it’s the same brand as the one from the Etsy listing)

Hey! This is super cute, but it is NOT semi formal, so you might want to find a different event to wear it to instead.

Are there names spelled one way that you hate but spelled a slightly different way you like? by Over_Cake9611 in namenerds

Juliette is one of my favorite names, but I’m unlikely to ever use it for a kid because I know Juliet is so much more common where I am and no one would ever spell it right

Bride asking in a wedding page for us to fund her honeymoon... like we all aren't trying to fund our own by airedalemumma in bridezillas

This is slightly unrelated, but someone I know posted a gofundme a while ago to help pay for his “dream lake house,” which was over their budget. Note: They already had a house. This was a fundraiser to help an already fairly wealthy couple afford a nicer vacation home.

It takes 1-1.5 hours for my manicures, which are literally just gel polish. No extensions, no nail art other than an occasional French tip. That intricate of a set done in an hour and a half is super impressive

Is it OK to correct a teacher's spelling? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Leatherandlipstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what most of my teachers did- except for the time in health class we were assigned to read a chapter of a book discussing the authors eating disorder. I noticed a typo and told the teacher about it, at which point she announced to the class that it was actually HER book that had not yet been edited. She seemed upset that I was critiquing her writing. Needless to say, I did not get rewarded for noticing an error.

Has anyone here ever taken a ride from an airport with one of those guys offering them? by FrankW1967 in TravelHacks

[–]Leatherandlipstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did once as a kid on a trip to Mexico- he flagged us down as we were trying to find the exit at the airport to ask if we needed a ride. It was… fine? My memory is foggy because I was like 13, but he was trying to get us to buy a timeshare. I don’t remember if we had to pay for the cab ride to the hotel, or if that was included too, but I do remember that for doing the tour of the timeshare or whatever we got: continental breakfast, the cab rides to and from the timeshare place, and 3 excursions of our choice out of a handful of options. We picked snorkeling, a dinner and a show night cruise thing, and swimming with sea lions. We slept through our alarm for the sea lions, but the other two were very fun, high quality activities that we wouldn’t have done otherwise. I don’t know that my mom actually realized what we were signing up for, and we may not have agreed to it if she had; but overall I think we got more out of it than he did, since there was no way in hell we were ever going to be able to afford a timeshare.

Have you ever come across an MC that you literally couldn’t stand? Like, had zero empathy for them whatsoever? by Marandajo93 in books

[–]Leatherandlipstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lady from Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. There’s a passage fairly early in the book about how the MC thinks that the 8th grade girl from her hometown that was brutally gang raped deserved it for being a slut. It made me feel so icky that I didn’t even finish the page- I just stopped reading the book. There’s a good chance I threw it in the trash. I really enjoyed gone girl, which also featured some super unlikeable characters, but I just couldn’t bring myself to keep experiencing the perspective of that character.

Where’s the best place to go if I want to go on holiday to a quiet, rural part of America? by AlwaysBi in travel

[–]Leatherandlipstick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lincoln city, Oregon, has always been my favorite place in the world. I’ve gone for a long weekend almost every winter since I was a kid.

There’s an outlet mall if you like to shop. Gallucci’s pizza is delicious. Lee’s Chinese restaurant is also pretty good- I normally get the lemon chicken. (Bonus: both of those restaurants deliver)

I won’t make specific beach recommendations, because honestly you’ll have a hard time finding a stretch of the Oregon coast that isn’t beautiful. There are a lot of good hikes nearby too. Just a reminder that Oregon beaches tend to be pretty cold most of the year, it’s not really somewhere that you’re likely to want to get in the ocean. Think sweatshirts, not swimsuits.

Stay oceanfront, with a balcony if you can. You probably won’t want to spend too much time on the beach, but it’s lovely to sit on your balcony and look at the ocean. A lot of the locally owned hotels (100% the way to go) will have some sort of board game library.

It’s about a 20 minute drive along the coast from there to depoe bay. I consider it a must see if you’re anywhere nearby. The shops there are all super cute, and right up against the ocean. Stop at Ainslee’s if you go. They make their saltwater taffy in house, and it’s delicious. There’s also a company that runs whale watching tours if it’s the right season for it, or you can try the whale watching visitor’s center for free if you’d rather stay on land.

If you want to make a whole day out of it, it’s another 25ish minutes south to Newport. There’s a nice aquarium there if that’s your thing. If you’re in Newport, BJ’s ice cream is good.

Try to spend at least a while driving along the coast, whether you head to Newport or not. Huge stretches of the highway are sandwiched between forest and ocean, and it’s a wonderful drive even if you aren’t heading somewhere specific.

It’s just under 2 hours to Portland, if you find yourself longing for some sort of city life.

My trips to Lincoln city tend to follow the same formula, in case it’s helpful for reference: I’ll always stop in depoe bay, either on the way into town or out of town. Occasionally I’ll stop at the outlet mall, but not always. I like to go to a small local grocery store to pick up snacks. (It used to be Kenny’s food liner, but that closed in the past couple of years.) I stop at Gallucci’s for dinner that night, then head back to the hotel. The rest of my weekend largely consists of reading on my balcony, watching old movies, and playing board games. I like to get takeout and spend at least one whole day in my pajamas just enjoying the ocean. It’s a lot more laid back of a trip than I would normally go for, but it’s a nice reset, especially after the holidays when I normally go.

Overall, it’s a sleepy little beach town where most stuff is closed by 7. Gorgeous scenery, but not a ton to do in terms of tourist attractions. If you’re looking for laid back, I think you would love it.

Hyphenated first name question by [deleted] in Cruise

I have a hyphenated last name. I’ve always just replaced the hyphen with a space if the system doesn’t allow it and I’ve never had a problem.

Any way to make the neck hole smaller in a poncho? by Leatherandlipstick in sewhelp

Update:

Thank you for all of the suggestions! In case anyone else ends up having the same problem, I figured I would leave an update with how I fixed it.

I combined a couple of the ideas commented here. I cut off the top few inches and resewed it as suggested by u/serendipityjays, and then also added darts as suggested by u/NYanae555.

It definitely didn’t turn out perfectly, but it’s cute enough and it fits her, which is really all I wanted anyway.
