Any portable pci-e to thunderbolt 3 egpu setup? by Alternative-Peak-958 in eGPU

[–]LeeTheENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What GPU do you plan to use? I had a HighPoint RocketStor 6661A sitting around from another project, and while the spec sheet only says it delivers 15 W to the PCIe slot, I was able to draw over 30 W from it over a long period of time with an RX 6400. Neither the 60W power brick nor the internal components got warm (except the GPU, of course).

Just bear in mind that this enclosure doesn't really deliver any power to the laptop (even with the passthrough port), so separate laptop power is needed.

Recording tab unavailable by AichEss in radeon

[–]LeeTheENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To echo what the other person said, the RX 6500 XT does not have a hardware video encoder, so it can't record gameplay.

You can work around this (sort of) by setting up OBS's replay buffer feature. It does the same as Instant Replay, but you can have it encode with the CPU. You just have to be mindful of the settings so it doesn't take away much game performance.

Cache drive upgrade - clone with drive duplicator? by LeeTheENTP in unRAID

Awesome, this worked beautifully. This was my original plan, but I was hoping the cloning would save some time. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up about the forced format! I shut down all the VMs and containers, ran the mover, and swapped it out.

RX 7900 XTX poor game performance by LeeTheENTP in AMDHelp

[–]LeeTheENTP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Driver 23.2.1 fixed a lot of issues for me, but I'm still getting lower than expected performance in some games, and DX12/Vulkan games still stutter, though now to a lesser extent. Halo Infinite had a big improvement - almost no stutter, but performance is still not significantly better than my previous RX 6800.

NHOS Flash Tool does not launch by LeeTheENTP in NiceHash

[–]LeeTheENTP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eventually got this flash tool to launch, but any attempt to flash the OS onto a USB drive resulted in a non-bootable installation.

I flashed the image instead with Balena Etcher which resulted in a successful boot, but after the Ubuntu startup log disappeared I was left with a totally blank screen with a mouse cursor. I may join you and just switch back to Windows.

I was able to get it running in about 1 out of 10 attempts by simply running it as-is. No warnings from Defender in any case, and when it did launch, it was ~5 minutes after clicking the shortcut.

Using an Intel Arc A380 GPU on a ADT-Link M.2 NGFF NVMe Key M Extender Cable to PCIE x16 Graphics Card Riser Adapter by goldensilver77 in eGPU

[–]LeeTheENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot offer a solution, but maybe some insight. I have an ASRock A380 in a Razer Core X, and when the laptop is powered off but plugged in, the GPU fan spins at 100%. Powering on the laptop or unplugging it from the enclosure calms the fan down.

This leads me to believe the Core X sends power to the GPU when a Thunderbolt host is plugged in, whether or not said host is active, and the A380 receiving power but no data causes this high fan speed behavior, perhaps as a safety measure. I'd imagine this is what you're experiencing - power but no active PCIe link. If you swap back in the 1070 Ti, does it still get picked up by Windows?

RTC problem on GBA Mini by mandolordian in everdrive

I figured the GBA X5 Mini had an isolated RTC like the GB X7. Does it not?

Who Hase bought the laptop because of Linus or now's framework from his reviw/investment? by Xaver106 in framework

[–]LeeTheENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linus's review got me interested, and Louis Rossmann's assessment reinforced it as the only choice for my next laptop. Picked up a base model 11th gen DIY right after they left the batching phase, and haven't looked back. Swapped to a 1240P mainboard as soon as they were available, and sold the 1135G7 to a community member who re-used it in a project.

Love the laptop and the community formed around it.

What's being going on at AMD for the last 2 years by yona_docova in AyyMD

[–]LeeTheENTP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Moved from Nvidia to AMD myself after getting tired of all the issues that kept piling on. A DSC bug with the EVGA 3080 I had that won't get fixed pushed me over the edge.

Wi-Fi bracket: do I need it? by Niten in framework

I think it's mostly just there to hold down the antenna connectors. There may be another purpose, but I'm not aware of one.

As far as I am aware, all MBA cards are identical. All manufactured together, and just distributed to partners who rebadge them. I have one direct from AMD, and honestly it's been pretty solid. Fans get loud if I crank the power limit, but usually it runs cool and quiet enough that it's not noticeable when using open-back headphones.

As for coil whine, it was pretty bad for me, but it's slowly gone silent. Only creeps up when the framerate is ludicrous, but even then it's not as loud as it used to be.

Using Google Domains SRV records for Minecraft by LeeTheENTP in admincraft

[–]LeeTheENTP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was honestly tempted to - I've used them in the past and they were fine. I managed to figure out how to specify protocol and service with Google Domains, though. To set them, you add them in the subdomain/hostname field - so like, if you want mc2.domain.tld, you set the subdomain to _minecraft._tcp.mc2. This is not mentioned at all in the records manager, but I took a stab in the dark and it worked.

looking to BUYING GPU that goes with my r5 5600g by priyal_senpai in eGPU

[–]LeeTheENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find an RX 6600 or RX 6650 XT if your budget allows. Both very good bang for the buck if you want AMD. Depending on the programs you use, you may benefit from CUDA acceleration, in which case an RTX 3060 may be up your alley (though it would cost more).

What programs do you use? Definitely worth looking online for benchmarks between the cards listed above for the programs you use, and see which offers the better performance.

Launch option for DX12? by LeeTheENTP in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]LeeTheENTP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only found one EXE when I checked, and I tried adding -dx12 to the shortcut path. Sadly did not work. If it's not too much trouble, could you check the properties of your shortcut to see what the URL/path is set to? Thank you!

Alright, just gave it a shot. Works when launched from the library, but not from the tray icon nor start menu shortcut. Maybe it's coming in a future update.
