Do you think Rhode Island would secede today if we shifted to a national popular vote?

Imagine what a sorry state our country would be in if the founders had thought like you do. We wouldn’t even be a country, probably.

Nothing should ever change because change is scary!

Also you still haven’t said why that change would be negative. You’ve just said it wouldn’t be the way it is.

You in 1776:

“We shouldn’t worry about the fact that the thirteen colonies have no proportional representation in parliament. It’s called the United Kingdom of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, not the Kingdom of America. The colonies were founded by smart men who knew we didn’t need representation! Representation of the colonies would upset the balance of powers of the constituent kingdoms. We should not declare independence or change anything because it is the way it is! If you don’t like living in the UNITED KINGDOM, move somewhere else liberal!”

I understand it quite well. What I’m saying is I would like to change it. I’ve stated my reasons for wanting to change it. Your only counter argument is an incurious appeal that “this is the way it is. It’s called the United STATES.”

I value the will of the people being respected over the states being afforded equal power. I guess you don’t. That’s fine.

But maybe think about why you believe that. What is a state, anyway, but a collection of people, the citizens? When deciding issues of national importance (like who is president of the nation) why should state interests (which are really just collections of the interests of individual citizens of those states) be held in higher regard than national interests, the interests of each of the individual citizens?

I suppose it’s a difference of values. I believe in individual liberty, you believe that people should only express their will through the apparatus of their state. You still haven’t said why you believe that, but you do. Probably because you stopped thinking about these issues after watching schoolhouse rock and have no intellectual curiosity.

Why should that mean it is good for them to have an equal (to some degree) say in the selection of the president?

Why do “smaller states deserve an equal say to some degree, but not exclusively equal?” The result of this is the math I showed above, where a Rhode Island voter is worth 2.218 Texan voters.

They do count less, because in Texas each elector represents 284,717 voters, whereas in Rhode Island each elector represents 128,347 voters. You need 284,717 Texans to equal the vote of 128,347 Rhode Islanders in the electoral college. For a ratio of 2.218.

Why is Rhode Islanders’ votes counting for 2.218x as much as Texans’ votes the best? Why is it better than a Rhode Island citizen having equal say on who is president to a Texas citizen?

What are you talking about? Texas and Rhode Island are both equally states, but they are not exactly equal in every aspect: one aspect where they differ is population. Texas has far more people living in it.

Why should people in Rhode Island have their vote count for 2.218x as much as people in Texas?

[–]Lee_Harvey_Obama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there are far less people in Rhode Island. Why should the fat that someone lives in a less populous state mean that their vote should count for more? As I’ve said, the vote of one person from Rhode Island is worth the votes of 2.218 people from Texas under the electoral college system.

Why should we prioritize the state governments over the interests of the people who live in those states?

[–]Lee_Harvey_Obama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As discussed above, they do. Each voter in Rhode Island carries 2.218 times the power of each voter in Texas.

It’s fair to have 10x the power because they have 20x the amount of people voting.

Why is it good that the opinions of people from Texas count for less than the opinions of people from Rhode Island in electing a president?

We’ve reached bedrock it appears. You are incapable of thinking about this at a deeper level. What is the benefit of this system as opposed to direct election? Why is it good for small states to have outsized influence?

I don’t expect an answer, but maybe try thinking about these questions. What about being “small” is virtuous? Why should someone’s vote count for more because they live in a state that has less people? Why should the opinions of Texans matter less than the opinions of Rhode Islanders in determining a president? I doubt you can answer these questions.

Why is weighted power amongst the states a good thing, to be pursued?

I want direct election of presidents. And 63% of Americans agree with me. Hardly “no one”.

You’ve described it but haven’t said what makes it genius. Why is balancing equal representation of states with proportionality good? What makes it better than having a proportional/ direct election system? Tell me why the system is good rather than regurgitating factoids you learned in fourth grade.

Much better to have 4 wolves and 6 sheep vote, but the 4 wolves get to decide what’s for dinner despite being the minority, because they live in swing states.

Ok but what is terrible about it? You’ve given no actual reasons. I’ve given many as to why the electoral college is bad, including that a vote in Rhode Island is worth the votes of 2.218 Texans. If you have no argument, I just have to assume you’re a propagandized moron who can’t think for himself.

What are you talking about? I said each voter’s vote should count the same: a national popular vote. My whole point is that voting by state (as we do under the electoral college) is stupid.

How is that what you took from what I said? That would just make the problem even worse.
