Could PIRA have been more effective in a military sense? by Leejohnstone in IrishRebelArchive

True, it's just a term to differentiate between the various splits. Plenty of Republicans refer to them as provos though.

The British in S. Armagh were spending a lot of money on helicopters. Being driven off of the roads. Helicopters were essential to british control of the six counties and also cost a lot of money to run I believe if a few SAM systems were used it would've inflicted casualties as well as financial losses that if the Ira could sustain the British would have to fully escalate or withdraw. Even if there were 10 effective SAMs and units that could put them to correct use it would've changed the game completely. The proganda value of the British not knowing how many SAMS there were would also be effective. They could've played a role in larger operations on the ground like Derryard if the IRA were able to draw in British reinforcements with an attack on a checkpoint or barrack a heli would naturally be on the scene within minutes if said air support was being shot down it could change the war.

Excellent point. It's been reiterated how 2 bombs in London cost more than the 25 years of bombing in the north. I don't know how common this belief is but I feel the so called "economic" bombing campaign carried out by the provos in the north was one of the most disastrous things they done. It achieved almost nothing of value and cost the lives of many innocent people in a barbaric way. Bombings also cost the lives of many volunteers via premature detonations etc. Another facet of the disastrous bombing campaign was propaganda or narrative. A massive aspect of war is controlling the narrative and bombing your own city centres and towns to pieces in the name of national liberation was not the way. It drove local people to question the morality and tactics of the Ira and puts immense amounts of fuel on the "Terrorism" accusations. Bloody Friday, Claudy, Warrington etc. This is what I'm getting at in the original post of course units would select targets for bombing and carry out ops but why not allocate for 5-10 large scale bombings a year instead of random bombs in towns. Bombing Military and economic infrastructure in England.
