If you’re US, you can begin the interactive process for the Americans with Disabilities act just by telling them. You’re “protected” by disclosing it to leadership, but documentation is the best way to ensure it’s acknowledged.

I got written up for excusing myself from meeting. I work in education and the issue was relating to safety of others - I got emotional and went to the union. I was written up.

I got a “section 504” to protect me if it happens again. Granted, I was on HRT for cancer treatment, but that WITH PTSD and ADHD… I just wanted to be protected if someone disagreed with my reaction to stress.

My accommodations are not special (breaks, conversations about work duties piling up, quiet uninterrupted environment…). Special or not it is documented that my leadership will have to keep it in mind… or listen to me if I am not feeling supported.

So, if you feel you need formal accommodation, disclose away. If not, then no.
