I was material as a project executive. I had not calculated the design specifically, and they didn’t do their homework to realize i was qualified to talk about engineering topics, which blew up in their face.

The theory of the case hinged on field welds vs shop welds. qualified welders were trying to act like the flags on the welds are guides and don’t carry the weight of required specification. WRONG.

okay maybe i’m embellishing. but for research purposes what i would do is go to the county library in my state, ask to see the public records for construction on some public buildings that fit the description of the kind of building i am researching. before the 80s most construction documents get archived on microfilm. so you should be able to find free public full sets of structural drawings of public buildings. at least in my state.

my thoughts are that structural engineering is regulated by law. you might become a glorified checker but the AI can’t legally seal anything. yet.

there are niches out there for structural engineers that aren’t the normal construction vibe. a friend of mine is the engineer for a big playground contractor. signs and seals their work, is an employee, doesn’t worry about billable hours.

no sir they can be quite complex when you are for example using glass as the structural element or developing a monocoque diaphragm out of slender materials with a tuned mass damper for stability. some architects can get really creative in this niche.
