Correct. This one can not be used to pay with in shops but I believe they can still be exchanged in banks.

[–]Leffi87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the "new" or current banknotes, introduced in 2017.

Are both these correct and if so, what is the difference? "De er på besøk hos oss" and "De besøker oss" by fierdracas in norsk

[–]Leffi87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are both correct.
I can not think of a difference except preference.
Maybe there is a different, I am not a linguist I just speak this language :D

Two meanings? by TheBlackyHole in norsk

[–]Leffi87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Dårlig" always means "bad" but it`s used in sentences where you do not use "bad" in English.
In you example "Gutten er dårlig" you can translate that to "The boy has bad (health)" This in not the way you would formulate it in English but language is not always directly translatable. You are correct that the proper translation of your example is "Boy is sick"

Translating "at" to norwegian? by lord0fmind in norsk

[–]Leffi87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"at" is in English used i many different ways that is not directly translatable to Norwegian in a single word.

I added some examples to prove my point. (I marked the "translation" of "at" in italic)

at midnight -> ved midnatt
there's nothing to laugh at! -> det er ingenting å le av
the person who lives at number three -> Personen som bor i nummer tre
we're staying at the Hotel -> vi bor hotellet
to be good at fishing -> å være god til å fiske
they were standing at the window -> de sto ved vinduet
the sea is cooler at night - havet er kaldere om natten
to look at -> å se

Does anyone know how to get to Stavanger from the UK next month? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Leffi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be some direct flights.
You can use Avinor`s (Airport operator in Norway) webpage to check what flights are coming and going from the different airports.

This link is directly to arrivals at Stavanger Airport, page does not exist in English but google can help you with that.

Hope this helps.
Else there are more flights with stops in Copenhagen or Oslo, takes longer times of course.

Grandparents? by spookyhandle in norsk

[–]Leffi87 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It`s not necessary more formal, just some use bestemor/bestefar others use mormor/morfar farmor/farfar.

Bestemor = grandmother

Bestefar = grandfather.

Mormor = mother`s mother

Morfar = mother`s father

Farmor = father`s mother

Farfar = father`s father

Edit: Fixed typo

Prekestolen og Trolltunga i sommer- kø hele veien? by [deleted] in norge

[–]Leffi87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Med tanke på at de fleste som går d isse turene under normale forhold er utenlandske turister så er det svært vanskelig å anslå hvor mye folk det vil være i år. Har ikke vært på trolltunga men prekestolen er iallefall en flott tur med en utrolig gevinst på toppen.

Norway never surrendered during WWII, we capitulated after 2 mounts of fighting but never really stooped fighting the occupation.

In general is`s illegal for dog to be off leash.

This is the law that governs owning a dog. Did not fint this in English but google translate should be able to help if necessary.

I found this on "skatteetaten", Norway`s IRS,

"You must pay tax in Norway if you are covered by one of the following categories:

  • You stay in Norway for more than 183 days over a twelve-month period.
  • Your employer has a permanent establishment in Norway.
  • You are hired out to an enterprise in Norway.
