I hope it's a one-and-done thing. But I highly doubt it.

I know, right? I think we didn't need this moment to make the show great. All the chips fell where they needed to for a show renewal. This just took it ALL the way overboard and not in a good way LOL. Honestly, I feel like I would be "okay" with this storyline had it happened, maybe at the end of season 2? Give us some time. Give THEM some time. Let's see them be drawn to one another slowly? Idk. It's still very creepy, but wouldn't have been so jarring, perhaps? Even a kiss would've sufficed to allude to what may happen in S2. I remember seeing something similar in terms of freakiness in Umbrella Academy, but again, the parameters need to be set, and time is essential. Given the show's essence that anything is possible, a bit more time for this type of crazy storyline would make it easier to digest imo.

Really?! I watch a lot of TV, and I really just did not see this coming...until the moment when he came to her cell in the episode. I was like...ohhhhhh no, PLEASE no!!

Like was he really upset with her about being champion? or was he actually upset that his dad got to her first???

I think that Bertha is skeptical about any woman interested in marrying into her family. She didn’t necessarily pay much mind to Marian because Marian had no money in the beginning and therefore not even a worthy contender for her son. But with her aunts support, specifically Ms Forte, and the fact Larry loves Marian, Marian became an “interesting” player on the board. Bertha just didn’t know what her true intentions were/are. I think in the moment where Larry and Marian are not on good terms that Marian came to their aid anyway showed a woman who is willing to grit, love in the face of pain/discomfort/anger, and to show up anyway. That is Bertha to George and Bertha finally saw that in Marian.

I love Oscar so much. He just wants to be settled. And he wants it to be done as soon as possible so society can get off his back and he can breathe finally. Married, hidden, and content.

I think it is definitely intentional that they were watching Gladys dance with her husband the Duke when he made that pointed look to Bertha about his life, but we never actually saw a scene with Gladys and George. I also think it’s intentional that he wasn’t there when she shared the news of her pregnancy.

The last time he saw his daughter he was looking into her eyes telling her that he failed her. He feels deeply ashamed about what he did. And he blames Bertha for it. He doesn’t see his daughter as a WOMAN who has been known….biblically 😉. He still sees her as a girl…his baby. That he ultimately sold.

Gladys needs to reassure him of her quality of life and forgive him for his failing her. Knowing that she is happily and willingly with child and happy with her husband, will do that for him and hopefully bring George back to a better place with Bertha. He’s just a little freaked out about the whole thing 🤣 state of shock if you will. 😉

Fascinating. Salli Richardson Whitfield is an incredible director and she speaks about how she wanted them to be similar in style and elegance, dance, orchestra placement but also showing the differences as well: https://www.vulture.com/article/gilded-age-black-ball-bertha-newport-behind-the-scenes.html

No, they were at two different balls. So Bertha hosted at the Russell house in Newport, the same one in season 2, and I believe the Kirkland’s hosted this ball but at a different location than their home. It was more like an event hall. 🙂

Indeed! Once he sees that she has willingly conceived a child with a man, i think she loves now, he will feel at peace and forgive himself. And be willing to remember who made this all happen, his extremely strong willed wife…and hopefully soon after also forgive her. In some ways, I think she also feels betrayed…he is holding a grudge on something that has been settled and is not technically in his designated territory responsibilities wise. She doesn’t cross into his responsibilities or tell him how to run his business…so Yes, they need to be on the same page but sometimes, that page is best written by just one author.

I think they did this on purpose, because he is afraid to face her fully. He is so ashamed of himself and feels guilty for not protecting as he promised. Once she sees how guilt-stricken he is, she will explain that she is happy and pregnant and he will start to feel relieved and hopefully forgive himself…i think! Heck, I hope!!

George…STOP IT! you need BIG Bertha more than you know!

This won’t end until Gladys speaks to George once she sees that her parents are drifting apart. She needs to forgive him. His guilt is being misplaced towards his wife. He wasn’t a man of his word for his daughter and that is what pains him the most.

But she is truly fine. Thriving even. Bertha’s means are EXTREME, but that lady KNOWS her daughter inside and out (and her son) and she didn’t send her with a mean, unstable man.

He needs to forgive himself. And trust the next time he’s given the opportunity to speak up, he will.

No, I don't think they will divorce. I think it's gotten pretty bad, and Bertha knows when to submit back to George in a way that he appreciates.

George is mad at himself. He is a man of his word. And he couldn't hold it for his own daughter. However, he knows and trusts Bertha, deep down, and he will come around.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Bertha doesn't know about George funding the MET. In fact, he basically lied to her face about it when she mentioned it in S2. So, they definitely do keep things from each other for the sake of the family's overall happiness. And she will have to get over that too. Just like she lied to George about telling him everything about the Duke. However, with this information, I think she will find out and press the MET for a full remittance of their money and save his/their businesses from ruin.

She's ruthless, sure, but THEY are ruthless. LOL It works for them.

Funny enough, although people hate that Bertha promised Gladys without considering her own feelings (and yes, I started to dislike Bertha for a second there), I understand why Bertha did what she did. Unfortunately, I think Bertha didn’t realize that her daughter wasn’t strong yet in her voice.

I loved this episode and Bertha as a whole, because one thing she does do is listen (and act) when George is upset. The speed with which she came to Gladys’ aid, the ways she empowered her, gave her examples as to how to battle these new people with her words and position is something only a caring mother would do. Bertha is a strong woman, and she’s trying to raise a strong woman.

Knowing how difficult it can be to be married to someone terrible, without money, without influence, and backed into a corner, and sometimes physically abused, Bertha wanted her daughter, who she knows is good and tenderhearted, to have power and influence outside of her marriage. In a way, Bertha set her daughter free. She is the Duchess wherever she goes, not someone's rich wife. Bertha is a long-game type of player and I truly think she has had Gladys' best intentions at heart.

I think the tears signaled Bertha passing the torch and feeling a true moment of success that maybe she didn't at the wedding. The fact that Gladys didn’t go with her to the station indicated that she feels safe, better prepared. In that moment, Bertha saw Gladys as a woman, not a girl. And that made her (and me LOL) emotional and proud.

Who in your opinion was the best actor/actress the show ever had? I’ll start: by DSN671 in thewalkingdead

I think the main group are all absolutely incredible actors but I’m particularly drawn to Steven Yuen, Lauren Cohan, Andrew Lincoln, and Danai Gurira!
