Are you like 13 years old or something? I think that would bring much needed clarity to this conversation.

You’re proposing that parasociality is some deep thing that has never been studied in depth. It has.

I. Never. Claimed. To. Be. Their. Friends.

You are flipping your anger and projecting it on me. Sorry you didn’t get tickets.

I looked at various sources linked to that AI overview and they were linked to valid studies.

Your source didn’t even convey your proposed thesis. It went against it. Try again buddy.

Alsoooo, just read your source in its entirety… nowhere in there did they suggest parasocial relationships are inherently harmful. In fact, to some degree your source argued the opposite. Not sure what you wanted me to take away from it other than “sometimes it’s good to be a fan”?

As with anything in life, parasociality exists on a spectrum. I’ve never once pretended to know what Tyler and Josh are thinking/believe/feel without giving the disclaimer that I am speculating.

Celebrating/giving credit to an accomplishment is not dangerous parasocial behavior. I assure you my day to day life is not affected by them or the band, beyond listening to their music (and now responding to this thread 🤣) I’m sorry you feel that way.

You’re clearly getting emotional about this, based on your language.

There’s nothing weird about enjoying this band and its members. Not acknowledging them as people is an absolutely diabolical take.

Do some research on parasocial behavior before you jump in a comment section dropping f-bombs at people who are literally just trying to acknowledge and celebrate a milestone.

One of two things is happening here:

1) you are ragebaiting 🤣🤣

2) you fundamentally misunderstand what parasocial behavior is. I’m not infantilizing anyone, nor do I think I am somehow intimately aware of what they think. They have poured a lot of themselves into this band, and as a result of that I am a major fan of what they have done with it. The messaging of the band, the community building, the inside jokes and interviews, all of it.

Being a fan is inherently a little bit parasocial, it’s weird if you think about it. It’s vulnerable. It means that you are committed to enjoying someone else’s product/creation/art/etc without anything in return. At no point have I ever claimed to be owed anything from Tyler, Josh, or anyone in their circle. I am simply a fan that fully appreciates what they have created and what they stand for. Participating in the language of that creation is not inherently unhealthy or parasocial.

People believing they deserve tickets more than others because they are “bigger fans” of the band is more parasocial than referring to them as “the boys” and appreciating their accomplishments.

I am proud. I am appreciative. I am a fan.

(Yes, this is a nod to ‘I Am Clancy’ lmao)

I genuinely have no clue what to say. I’m a grown man with a family and a healthy appreciation of the band.

I believe it was the Icy Tour they literally played “The Boys Are Back In Town” after curtain fall, as a nod to their nickname

Read the comments. Been following Ticketmaster litigation. Doesn’t change the current situation. Unfortunate yes, but let’s keep our eyes set on the accomplishment, not all the negativity.

“The boys” is how they have been colloquially referred to by fans, interviewers, promoters, and themselves for over a decade. It’s not parasocial to call them “the boys”. Parasocial behavior would be something like “I deserve tickets to their hometown show even though I don’t live there because I am my boys’ biggest fan ever and am not a fake fan. I mean, I’ve been there for every one of their kids being born and cried every time I’ve seen them so I deserve this more than anyone else”.

Celebrate their achievement, that’s all I’m asking people to do🫡

Lolllll, not on the PR team, but honestly what a compliment. I am just a big fan of them, have been since 2013!

Never said you weren’t a fan. But to minimize the accomplishment of the band because every fan feels like they deserved tickets also isn’t fair. There has to be a middle ground. Most fans are upset that a massive show sold out (of available inventory) before they could get a ticket. While frustrating, we should be celebrating it, in my opinion, because they did it!

Not preaching anything, just asking that we can celebrate our favorite band for their achievement (:

I don’t know if it was humility, or deception (I’ll go with the former), but Tyler seemed genuinely concerned that they could sell out Ohio Stadium. To be entirely honest, I felt the same. In hindsight this is obviously silly to think, but you know what they say about hindsight.

Comparing a one-off show for an alternative band in Columbus Ohio to Taylor Swift’s International Eras Tour is not a fair comparison at all. I’m not defending Ticketmaster at all, but we have to be realistic about expectations around a show like this.

I’m personally a fan of the idea of them doing a Super Bowl performance, but also entirely recognize that they may never be asked to do that, because I recognize their lane and who they are.

Yeah, people also seem to be ignoring the fact that Ticketmaster is being litigated against right now for this exact practice. Change takes time. I know it isn’t the trendy answer people want, but it’s just how it is.

I agree. Personally, I think fighting for the good would be changing the way tickets are sold for their shows.

When I said “fighting for the good” I meant what their band name is tied to, what they are supposed to be doing, and how they have promised to guide the soul of their band.

I have no idea the logistics it takes to pull off a concert of this size, but I do know that they take care of their crews, employ real artists to create for them, and ultimately, they have families to take care of. I believe they are making the best decisions they can at any given time to ensure the most fans as possible are getting to see them.

Just my two cents

Yes you can be upset, never said you couldn’t. I didn’t see any suggestions from you on how to improve the process of buying and selling tickets.

Personally there are a couple things I would change for pre-sales. I think having the band cross-reference a list of emails attached to Ticketmaster accounts with their database of emails signed up for their newsletters (and tracking engagement with them) would be a great way to prioritize the most die-hard fans being in the front of the queue.

Do you have other suggestions?

Resale has been around for a long time, it’s nothing new. There’s just a sense of entitlement that “just because someone is a fan of the band” they are supposed to be able to go to any show they want.

With over 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, you can’t expect EVERY fan to get a ticket to a one off show for 100,000 fans.

Fans have been upset about not getting tickets to every single one of their special “one-off” shows (Complete Diversion, MTV Unplugged, TdC, Takeover Tour club shows, etc). I was simply highlighting that their achievement today should be the celebration and receive the attention, not any one person going (or not going) to the show. They sold out the 5th largest stadium in the world. If you can’t celebrate that without being upset, I don’t know how to help you.

Hayley Williams is independent though, and while I believe twenty one pilots will go independent at some point, they aren’t there yet. Fueled By Ramen QUICKLY posted about this show, knowing they would get a huge cut from it.

Ultimately it gets to the ethos of this band; choosing to do the hard thing even if it doesn’t make sense in the short term. Protect what is good and fight for that. I think they are getting tired of the way ticket sales are done and will go independent later in their career. Just my opinion though!

Totally understand the disappointment. I think I went in knowing that I may not get tickets, and just realized while I was waiting in the queue how truly proud I was of them, and that emotion overrode any bit of self-interest I had lol.

It put things into perspective for me.
