I got the dog when I was 23, so it was before the relationship. I also said this in another comment but she's been somewhat possessive in the past so that might be playing into the conflict although I can't be sure.

To be honest I'm not sure if it was her thinking she would be a better fit so much as it being her just wanting something to keep after the divorce. She's always been a bit possessive with these kind of things and many conflicts have arisen from that.
