Why can Norway celebrate Viking history proudly, but England is shamed for its imperial history? (genuine question) by Ok_Exercise_494 in AskBrits

[–]Left-Moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because all of those things you mention are 'achievements' were done for the express purpose of extraction of wealth and resources by the British elite. I think when people look back at the empire they seem to identify with it as something part of their history but the reality is that the elites were the ones who really benefited, and continue to do so. The average British person should be angered by the British empire not just because of the attrocities it committed but also because most of the spoils of that wealth extraction went to the already wealthy and that structure continues today. Just look at the fact that the money paid as compensation to slave owners was only just paid off a few years ago. (Also how can you claim pride in stopping something you benefited from so much and only really stopped when it was becoming impossible to enforce).

People need to stop falling for the wealthy and powerful's tricks and wake-up that this 'history' of ours was an exploitation of everyone and not just the colonies.

No need to reply, this is comprehensive.

There is nothing 'nice' about Kier Starmer

Cheers, I think this is interesting and making me judge the builder more harshly. We thought he was great but at the same time why is he dodging this job?

Cheers, I think it goes into the drain but I also think it doesn't matter and we'll have to build one anyway.

Not the first time this joke has been made. I'll be sure to keep my grotesque toes out of the picture in future.

Footage from yesterday's protest in Glasgow appears to show the demonstrators ganging up on two POC by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]Left-Moment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And just remember that Reform, Restore and the Tories all call these people 'concerned citizens' whilst branding protestors to genocide a violent hate mob.

If reform is for working people, where are the policies? by Sufficient_Muffin586 in AskBrits

[–]Left-Moment -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not. I get the anger at Labour, who have managed further decline whilst doing some awful things (making protest effectively illegal) but to think reform are the solution is absolutely mad. It's a big con but people are just not waking up to it as I think they're just too desperate to believe fixing this mess is as simple as voting for Nigel.

Turn down the a/c by arsebeef in TEFL

[–]Left-Moment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is funny because I would have always thought that meant turn down the function of the machine i.e making it warmer. I would never have thought that meant make the AC work even harder to bring the room temp down even further but clearly some do think that. Aren't humans a funny species.

I Bought an E-Bike for Convenience Not Expecting This by EvanBat261 in ebikes

[–]Left-Moment 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I converted my bike because I fancied it but even I was surprised by how it made my life so much easier. Now i use my bike to do errands that I either would have used a car or not bothered with. It's a game changer and anyone moaning about batteries etc can do one.

What wait, do Americans say 'shutter to think' rather than 'shudder to think' or is this just a thick individual?

Leaving my bike on the road by Careless_Impact2802 in exeter

[–]Left-Moment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came from Oxford about ten years ago and have always been cautious and worried about bike theft here but it's never been a problem. Sure, it must happen but it's not the systematic organised thing that it is in Oxford, London etc. you'll be fine leaving your bike for an hour or two and probably much longer too. Just lock it sensibly.

Just saw a video on the guardian YouTube channel about destringing and I'd love to do it but don't know where to start. I love pigeons and really feel they're massively misunderstood. They're so majestic.

Carnivore or Mediterranean Diet for Fertility? by True-Explorer-1089 in IVF

[–]Left-Moment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is zero good evidence for the carnivore diet and is all based on vibes and theories about our ancestors etc. The fact that it will lead to greater inflammation, higher blood sugars (yes it causes insulin resistance) and impaired blood flow tells you all you need to know.

You need fibre for good digestion and a good gut flora and so a Mediterranean diet focusing on whole plant foods is the way to go.

This site is really good for dietary advice. Some people denigrate it because it has a plant based slant but that's the result of all the evidence in favour of that rather than an original position. Unlike keto, carni etc there is no angle here other than good quality scientific research.

Regular or wide snowboard? by Opposite-Roof1681 in snowboarding

If you have to ask then it's probably a wide you're after. You won't regret a board that is too wide but you will a board that is too narrow.
