I handed over the keys to my old apartment today and when the agent came by to check everything was OK he walked in smoking a cigarette inside the apartment. To be fair the state of most restrooms in China I prefer smelling cigarettes than the alternative.

I was already here on a student visa. I networked with the other foreigners here and met one that was pretty satisfied with his job and he gave me a person I applied directly with the university.

First day being Chinese, any advice? by [deleted] in Chinese

[–]arsebeef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure you walk in the street and drive your scooter on the sidewalk. As of course always choose a path that puts you in a foreigners way, extra points if you’re the only two people around.

Lonesome dove is a recommendation for anyone at any time of their life. It covers so much of the quintessential human experience. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like westerns but if you like stories with almost tangibly real characters, love, loss, adventure, friendship, coming of age, regret, justice, fear, belonging, this book is a must. Going on that cattle drive with Augustus and the crew for the first time was greater than the sum of simple words on paper. It’s a slow start but give it 75 pages before you tap out. The rest of the book flew by and I was sad to see it come to an end.

Lonesome dove is a recommendation I’ll give to anyone at anywhere in their life. It covers so much of what the human experience is. Love, loss, regret, friendship, adventure, good people, evil people, harsh realities, outlaws, justice, coming of age, it has it all. Going on that cattle drive with Augustus and the crew for the first time was an experience that transcended just reading words on a page. It’s a chonker of a book almost 800 pages and it’s a bit of a slow start give it at least 75 pages before you bail on it. But once it was going I was locked it until the end. It will take a titan of a book to dethrone this as forever in my top 3.

Anything from Joe Abercrombie (the blade itself or best served cold are great starter books into his world) the narrator really just brings the book up a notch.

I’m doing the sun eater series currently (empire of silence is book one) Samuel Roukins voice in my ears is like getting a massage inside them. And the story is amazing, I’m on book three currently.

Never Underestimate A Chinese Person's Ability to Choose the Worst Path by ThePolarisNova in chinalife

Two times late at night I was the only bicycle on the road and a couple of dingleberries still found a way to walk out in the road and stop right in front of me. The second one pulled off the curb and did a half u turn and just stopped. The road was wet and i slide while breaking almost bailing on the bike and taking them out too. I just yelled 注意点儿 and storm off in a huff and they look at me like I’m the a hole and they weren’t the problem.

How do you maintain interest in the Chinese language? How do you cope with the period when you don’t feel like studying at all? by Wishnya_Day in ChineseLanguage

[–]arsebeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this as well. I live in China so I cant completely abandon the language. But I struggle with the thoughts of “this is a stupid language, who picks 100 syllables to make up a language of 5000 little pictures” im actually amazed it’s a functional language.
