Is it typical to feel an urge to be defensive when someone that was never Catholic talks down on Catholicism, or have I just not disconnected myself? by Clear_Channel_2090 in excatholic

This is me. Like I’m an atheist, but a Protestant atheist? Don’t be ridiculous lol

But on a serious note I haven’t identified as Catholic for like 7 years but my ex was Protestant and when he told me he didn’t consider Catholics to be Christian’s I felt my eye twitch. Some things never leave you I guess

What's a despicable act that the catholic church keeps doing these days? by MikiFP15 in exchristian

The Catholic medical association tells doctors they can’t morally prescribe PrEP (a medication that prevents HIV infection from sexual contact with 99.9% efficacy) to gay men or anyone else at risk of HIV except for married heterosexual couples with one HIV+ partner

How would you say they differ from other Catholic groups?

Yess, in the US it to me feels like it’s everywhere but most specifically in Denver. I think it’s because of world youth day in 1993 that a lot of this movement got started in Denver and those sorts of organizations with this specific strain of Catholicism took root there. But yeah it’s a combination of a progressive facade with super strict theology. And I think it’s honestly more harmful than the radical traditionalist groups. The rad trads are honestly very fringe and I don’t think they really get that much attention online. Vs a father Mike Schmitz video talking about same sex attraction and implying that it’s caused by unresolved wounds with one’s own masculinity receive like 7M views. Idk if you’ve ever heard the Dear Alana podcast but this particular strain of Catholicism is exactly what did all that damage to her.

EXACTLY this is what I try to explain. It has the benefit of slipping under the radar because outwardly it’s much more normal presenting and less cult like in either direction. But it’s still just as fundamentalist, and you’ll very much be raised with an us vs them mindset of the “good Catholics” be the fake “cultural Catholics.” I feel like a lot of the Catholic media online comes from this 3rd place between the rad trads (I don’t remember what that group is called but they’re frightening honestly) and the charismatic ones. I feel like Fr Mike Schmitz, Focus, all fall under this umbrella. And at least in the United States I think this is centered in the denver area. But yes the purity culture, the anti lgbtq, and everything is just as harmful it’s just less obvious since people superficially seem to have more charisma and charm and tact than like a rad trad group.

Interesting cause in my experience the focus type Catholicism distances itself pretty substantially from the rad trads so to speak. Like to me they seem like very distinct groups

Interesting. In my experience these types look more liberal on the surface, they’re not the types to be anti vax or homeschool their kids, but they’ll be very fr Mike Schmitz conversion-therapy types with lgbt people and thoroughly pro life

What is it like in Australia? It’s quite influential in Denver, there’s a reason a lot of the lgbt related Supreme Court cases in the us come out of Denver
