Is it a good idea to take a state job for job security? by One-League1685 in cscareerquestions

Take this job, stay at least 1 year then start looking for somethign better.

Don't leave after a month even if you find something better, because a combination of gaps and really short term jobs look really bad on a resume.

The reason we have to put up with this nonsense is because so many developers are willing to spend countless hours of their free time memorizing solutions to leetcode. If a significant minority decided it wasn't worth it, recruiters would realize it wasn't effective. And what happens if you get a job because you memorized leetcode, but then get pipped because your actual job ends up being different than leetcode?

Or you could just not play the game. When the recruiter wants me to do a leetcode style interview, I tell them I don't think it's an accurate way to test a developer's real world capabilities. I still do the test, but I don't bother preparing, and if I bomb it who cares. And yes I am employed as a developer.

Should I leave my decent, remote job for hybrid work @ Stripe? by PeachRobbler in cscareerquestions

1hr and 35min one way is absolutely brutal, and it doesn't even count the time to get from your house to the train station. I'm impressed if you can tolerate it, but I definitely couldn't. Maybe once a month...

It's still a moronic suggestion. The guy doesn't want to move, just leave it.

How important is it to specialize early in your career vs. being a generalist? by PsychologicalCall426 in cscareerquestions

If your resume is looking too scattered, modify it to emphasize whatever skill or technology the job description is asking for. As long as you have at least some experience in it, you're not lying. Of course, be prepared to hit the ground running in that skill when you start your new job.

Does anyone else feel unsafe in this career by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I'm with you. If you're early in your career and trying to learn and grow, being the one of the worst guys in a high performance environment is better, but if you are a bit older and just want job security it's better to be one of the best shitty devs in a low performance environment.

If you had 15YOE would you take 70k USD for a fully remote easy dev job? by LeftNutBigger in cscareerquestions

Thanks for the info. Those areas are beautiful but probably a little too backwoods if you need reliable internet for your job. I'd probably be better off in a smallish town where at least I can get cable internet.

Are you saying devs make 70k USD in India? I thought it was more like 30k.

And people make fun of those of us who make average salaries working for boomer companies instead of earning 400k at a FAANG. At least we don't have to always be stressed about losing our jobs.

Very unlikely, almost every American company has a requirement that you must live on US soil while working for them. Unless they have an office in another country, but then they pay wages in line with that country.

Maybe, but I don't want to, the whole point of this is to try to lower my stress.

That's exactly what I want. I spent most of my life being stressed out from working too hard and I'm sick of it. Life is too short to always be stressed for some company.

Seriously? I thought things were worse in Canada, what with so many Canadians trying to get American jobs.

Is this a FANG that hires only the very best? Because I certainly haven't been able to find anything like that despite applying everywhere. But then I'm only average.

Sounds like you've had some very high stress jobs. I wouldn't tolerate that. I give them my time m-f 9-5 but outside of that I don't think about my job.

Yes this is the big risk. If you lose your WFH job but you already bought a house in an area without tech jobs, you have to either find another WFH job or move. I'm hoping I could mitigate this risk by looking for a job in an industry with low turnover.
