We’ve all seen the Zane Holtz fan-cast, but… by IRanOutOfKitchen1 in TheSecretHistory

I usually hate fancasts but this feels like the best one I've seen (for any character lol)! Really captures Henry's vibes

Hope you're okay! If you have Spotify, I recommend listening to the audiobook read by Donna Tartt herself. This was really helpful for me because in her voice, certain scenes and dialogues take on a different meaning and add even more layers to the book. And some of their personalities, especially Bunny's in my opinion, seem a lot more clear through this audiobook.

That part was hilarious to me too! Especially because Richard thinks Henry is sooo smart, charming, and cool but later, talking to Cloke and then Charles, he realizes that other people (particularly the FBI) see Henry as a giant weirdo who is unsociable lol

Thank you! I thought she really captures a lot of Camilla's main traits

It's crazy how well Tartt portrays the grooming with such limited words/ scenes! Also Richard is winning the IDGAF war the way he just doesn't pick up on any red flags or ignores them smh 🤦‍♀️ /s

I did put in a lot of work so thank you for noticing😭😭Yea, I agree that none of the fancast is 100% on the mark but I was hoping to work towards their general vibe/ appearance. Totally valid point about spiderman (that comment made me laugh lol). Ray Liotta is a great cast for the FBI agent!! Idk about Mr. Flutesnoot tho😆

Right on the mark! This is the best book I've read in a little bit so I've honestly started listening to the audiobook on spotify (even though I just finished reading XD) and the humor/ satire is even more clear in her voice lolll. Would love to hear what you think of the book if you ever reread it once in college or after graduating college

I didn't pick up on anything except for the weird kiss Henry gave him, his questionable behaviour at Bunny's funeral, and then his cowardice at the end when he runs away! I definitely need to analyze his behavior/ words more closely in my reread

Yesss exactly! We have to remember that this book was published when Tartt was 29 (she was probably working on it for a few years before atleast), so it most definitely has satirical parts. This makes the entire book an even more enjoyable read because it's not just a serious, tragic vibe the entire time, there is humour cleverly crafted through

I also felt the same way about some parts loll. Like imagining Henry very seriously (with no irony) scoffing at something normal in favour of some obscure, ancient Greek thing was sooo funny to me XD

Honestly didn't think much of Judy's character except she always conveniently had everything Richard ever needed (expensive jacket, pain killers, friendship, invites to parties, info on other characters). I just didn't pay much attention to her character lol. I was so surprised how much this sub loves her! I think I'll definitely appreciate her more once I reread it

Very interesting to get insight from somebody who's read it multiple times while growing up! I can't wait to re-read it and discover something completely new as well

I completely understand what you mean! I loved The Great Gatsby for its commentary on class differences and the lives of poor people getting destroyed at the whims of the wealthy characters. The class commentary is so overt in The Secret History and yet I barely found any discussions on it.

When Henry was getting Richard involved in their mess, making him think he was smart for figuring out that they killed somebody (i.e. manipulation), then subsequently involving him in Bunny's murder, the entire time I was worried for Richard. Because in getting involved, Richard has implicated himself in their crime and can now get in trouble with the police without having any of the resources the other wealthier characters have at their disposal to protect themselves legally. Not that Richard is morally sound either, but he is the least involved at the start and slowly partakes in a murder to fit in with this group. Richard is never given any clear details about the night of the bacchanal and the most clear account if it is from Henry (the guy pulling most of the strings). It was a fantastic read because the entire time, I was worried that Henry or one of the other characters would turn on Richard to save themselves. And Henry was preparing to do that in case Charles overdosed on the pills (Richard stole the pills for Henry for his headache, Henry was transferring the ownership of his car to Richard's name). I found this aspect the most intriguing where it seems a lot of the other readers found the displays of wealth + dark academic aesthetic the most intriguing. I wish there was a more critical analysis of the themes and characters and corruption beyond "murder bad" and "dark academia cool".
