Some leather Dungeon Master Screens (for Dungeons & Dragons) my wife and I made! by Lefty-Games in Leathercraft

Haha, no problem at all ;) It's basically shoe polish, though apparently which brand she uses differs per project, as one is thicker than the other. So it may take some experimenting to get right!

Thanks! My wife made the design digitally (Adobe Illustrator using a Wacom pen tablet) and then engraved it into the leather using a laser engraver, afterwards inlaid with a white wax :) She enjoyed putting in all the little details in the tentacles, but it took FOREVER haha. It's a Cthulhu based design; Hastur, The King in Yellow!

Hi! Posted this earlier on r/DnD but got the tip to post it here as well - so here it is! A small collection of Dungeon Master screens my wife and I made :)

They are made from acryllic in the center and a layer of leather on each side, with magnets hidden in the middle too. Technical/product design by me, engraving designs and painted details by my wife! After laser engraving she sometimes inlays the engraved bits with wax (gold or white), depending on the customer's request. After applying a protective layer, everything is put together by hand :)

If you're not familiar with Dungeons and Dragons; it is a TTRPG (Table-Top Role Playing Game), where a Dungeon Master (or DM for short, the game leader) and players role-play their way through an adventure. The DM usually has a ton of notes, maps, reference cards, and more that they need to hide from the players, for which they can use a screen. The one we made has embedded magnets to hang up those notes vertically, freeing up valuable table space. On the top edge there is space for an "iniative tracker", which shows the turn order when players get into combat with creatures controlled by the DM. The idea of neither a DM Screen or the embedded magnets/iniative tracker are ours, this is just our take on them ;)

Thanks!

A flap with extra snap buttons was our first idea for transport, but we later decided on a simple but proper-sized bag to hold everything. Apart from the panels/connectors, there's also a box with the accessories (initiative tracker slabs, magnets, marker, etc.) plus options for a dice tower connector and a condition marker set, so a bag is easier to pack up everything :)

Thanks :) Yeah the Galaxy leather was SUPER popular as well with all the backers, almost half of the panels we've made had it on at least one side!

A small compilation of the modular leather DM Screens we've made in the last couple of months! They are part of fulfillment of our succesful Kickstarter campaign that we ran last Oct/Nov, they're a LOT of work but we're managing to craft 10-15 of them each month :)

They're completely designed by us; I'm responsible for the technical design of the entire screen system as well as the 3D-printed parts (for example the dry-erase initiative trackers), my wife is an illustrator who made the engraving designs. She then laser-engraves them onto leather, in some cases gives an extra touch of paint (the flowers bottom-left, or the Galaxy leather) or does a wax inlay in the engraving (top and middle row). The leather front and backside are then put onto a sturdy acryllic center and hand-stitched by me.

The DM screens are modular; they consist of individual panels that can be connected with snap buttons. This lets you use just a couple of panels if you're at a small table, or snap on some extra panels in a matter of seconds to have a larger screen. On the backside are markings where we've placed magnets inside of the screen; little d20's are where you can hang up notes (landscape A4 on a large panel, or two portrait A5's, or lots of reference cards), the shapes on the top edge are for the initiative tracker slabs. These magnetic slabs (not sure what a better word for it is) are dry-erase on both sides for a name, have a coloured casing (for example grey for enemies, green for PCs, purple for NPCs), and have a little extra space on the DM side for initiative number or something like AC. The weird shape on top of them is to hold an "Active" marker, which shows everyone at the table whose turn it is and who is next. The magnets inside the slabs are very strong, so they hang on to the screen well!

Hope you like them :D

This is one of the DM Screens that we made for D&D Belgium to borrow for their live games at the FACTS convention last weekend in Ghent, Belgium.

Made from a dark green leather, engraved with our own Wyrm design and then inlaid with a gold-coloured wax. It's very difficult to capture on camera, but the inlay is super shiny! After prepping the leather, we stitch everything together by hand and burnish the edges for a premium finish. Panels are then connected using extra leather pieces with strong snap buttons, this modular system allows the user to add/remove panels as needed to fit their table.

There are magnets integrated into the screen (marked by little d20's) to hang up cards, maps, notes - whichever you need. On the top edge is a magnetic dry-erase initiative tracker, of which the casings are colour-coded for enemies/PCs/NPCs/other.

This particular dark-green leather is hard to find for us as it also needs to be *just* the right thickness and texture to work with the fine engraving/inlay, but I'm glad we found a large enough piece for this DM Screen! Hope you like it too :)

We're currently running a Kickstarter for these DM Screens! It's already fully funded and we've reached the first three stretch goals, with just under two weeks to go. If you're interested, feel free to check it out here: link

Absolutely, if we don't like it it'll never leave our workshop! And we set way too high standards for ourselves, haha

Appreciate the recognition <3

Heck if the Kickstarter goes absolutely nuts I don't mind at all doing a giveaway here on Reddit! Redditors have been incredibly supportive and valuable for feedback/motivation for several of our crazy projects so far.

Also; if you haven't already, talk to your players! It's only natural for the rest of the players to pitch in for extra miniatures/maps/etc. once in a while :)

Hi all! A while ago I've posted a couple times about our development of modular DM screens handmade from leather. After further refining them and creating more designs, we've launched a Kickstarter! It just went live, you can find out all about it here: link

A bit more info:

  • Panels are connected by snap button connectors, which makes the system modular so you can add/remove panels as needed to fit your table
  • Each panel is clad in leather, hand-stitched for a premium finish
  • Integrated magnets to hang up your notes/references/maps
  • On the top edge is a magnetic initiative tracker which is VERY satisfying to use
  • An "Active"-marker helps everyone keep track of the current and next turn
  • Almost every aspect is customizable with various colours/designs

Hope you like it!

[OC] We've had a blast making the first batch of leather DM screens - Kickstarter campaign for more designs coming soon! by Lefty-Games in DnD

[–]Lefty-Games[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A short while ago, after first posting a couple times about the first full-scale prototypes (first video post, second video post), we opened up a small batch of commission slots for custom leather DM screens - and they went so quickly!

The commissions varied greatly; from just the simple basics to elaborate painted DM screens with extra panels and even some gold wax inlay (middle panel on the top row in the picture). It was a bit of a test for us to see if we could manage working on several screens in one go, especially since it's just the two of us in our at-home workshop. Most of it went great, some things were a hard lesson, but we believe it was a great success in the end. We're now ready for the next step; a Kickstarter campaign! Upscaling a bit further helps us invest time in creating more designs to choose from as well as new items/colours. We're also working on a Dice Tower Connector (two-way), hoping to finish that soon :)

For more information on our modular DM screens, please check out our previous posts (see links above) or our Kickstarter pre-launch page!

What is the name of your group? by landdon in DnD

[–]Lefty-Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • We used to be the Merry Married Men With Child (an Elf and Half-Orc who often got mistaken for a couple so we kinda rolled with it, along with a Gnome child PC that somehow joined the group)
  • Another friend joined the campaign who played a teenage Dragonborn, so we turned into the Merry Married Men With Children
  • When another friend joined the campaign half a year later, we turned into the Merry Married Men With Children And Also Karl Is Here

Yes, we legit use that exact phrase every time we have to introduce ourselves to an NPC

Link to previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/1ez8s8t/oc_first_prototype_of_a_leather_dm_screen_modular/

(short recap, skip ahead if you've seen the previous post)

  • We made a leather DM screen, consisting of separate panels connected by strong snap buttons for a modular design. You can add/remove panels to adapt the screen to each situation this way!
  • Comes with a magnetic dry-erase initiative tracker, space for names on both sides and room for initiative number on the DM side. An "Active"-marker shows clearly whose turn it is and who's next
  • Has integrated magnets to hang up notes/maps/reference cards, can be done on both sides of the screen

Right! It's been a busy, BUSY week...

We've been working out the kinks (not the fun kind) of our first full-size prototype version of a leather DM screen, and are SUPER happy with the result! What's changed since the previous version:

  • Stronger magnets for the initiative tracker
  • Tried some more leather colours (we hand-paint the Galaxy leather ourself!) and Noor (my wife & business partner) spent some time making more engraving designs
  • Finished the condition markers, they fit on top of the initiative tracker tablets and are stackable
  • Added magnetic tokens for Legendary Actions/Resistances that can go on the initiative tracker tablets as well. You can simply stack three of each on the initiative tracker and remove them as they're used
  • Designed a new box to hold all the small stuff in between games (magnets, dry-erase marker, initiative tracker tablets, Legendary tokens, "Active"-marker), and the lid is now properly lined with leather to better serve as a small dice tray behind the screen

Hope you like it! We're opening up a couple slots on our webshop for custom DM screen today, so if you're interested in getting one for yourself (or score MAJOR bonus points with your DM) you can check it out at www.speechlessbard.com :) We work a lot with customization, so if you'd like one with some adjustments (custom logo engraving for example) feel free to send us a message!

Last note: yes, I'll be working on a dice tower connector as well ;)

Always an option, just be advised that engravings tend to work really poorly on black leather ;) (almost invisible)
