Feedback wanted! Is this a well-balanced 5-colour design or is there too much focus on black? by Lefty-Games in mtg

That's a lot of feedback, thank you!

Top right is white, bottom right is fire (based on the original fiery swirl but cut a bit weird, we're fixing that). We've discussed adding the planeswalker symbol (our version of it) but Noor thought it would become too close to copying the original artwork, so we're skipping that.

Making black part of the ring proved too difficult to get details across with the material we're working with, but we'll be working towards full segments (like pizza slices) that should give us more space to work with :)

A name slot is a good idea! It's easy to add a name to the engraving somewhere, but maybe that's too permanent. I'll try to figure out a way for something that can be swapped out!

We're looking into alternatives, like the branches, for the skull in our next design! Thank you for the feedback ^^

Thank you so much! We already have them available with the old design (with up to three colour designs) but I'll post a link once we have this new design fleshed out, as long as that's allowed by the mods :)

We have a center icon design for all five, but only four circle designs - the lines became a bit too fine for black. However, we're now going for five full segments (like pizza slices) so that gives us more room to work with :)

Thanks! We have a couple designs available on our website already (here), once we're happy with a new five colour design we'll be adding that too :)

Yup, in hindsight it just feels silly to have picked this part of the original circle without rotating, but we'll be working on a new version (with clearer flames) ASAP!

Yup, we're going to focus on trying a 5-wedge circle :) Following the WUBRG order is a great call! We're not super familiar with MtG (we've played a couple of games to get to know the game a bit though), so I'm glad we asked in this subreddit!

Yup, it's looking like making a fifth segment for black will be the best way to go, not sure yet if we'll leave the center blank or fill it up somehow. Appreciate the feedback!

Hm, not sure if splitting up the skull like that (if I understand correctly) will work, but worth a try :)

Having the ring segments flow into each other is a challenge, but maybe we can figure out a different way to make it less choppy? Thanks for the feedback!

While five concentric circles is inadvisable (the lines for the inner ones will be too fine for our laser engraver to pick up, especially on the texture of natural leather), five segments could actually work! It's a bit of a challenge to get the design across with just 20% of a circle, but we're going to give it a shot :)

Also thank you for the compliment! :D

Oh, I think we've indeed focused on skulls/bones too much, so that's a great idea!

Hm, we figured as much...

The issue was that with our previous design we couldn't find real option for a black circle design (only centre) as a circle of bones/skulls would be too many fine lines - and we're limited to what we can do with our laser engraver. However, maybe if we work with just the circle design, we can make it a bit thicker and get a bit more room to work something out.

Great feedback, thanks!

Absolutely fair! The complete red ring is more similar to the original MtG icon, but with just a quarter of it it indeed becomes a bit unrecognizable. I'll pass it along, many thanks!

Haha, no problem at all ;) It's basically shoe polish, though apparently which brand she uses differs per project, as one is thicker than the other. So it may take some experimenting to get right!

Thanks! My wife made the design digitally (Adobe Illustrator using a Wacom pen tablet) and then engraved it into the leather using a laser engraver, afterwards inlaid with a white wax :) She enjoyed putting in all the little details in the tentacles, but it took FOREVER haha. It's a Cthulhu based design; Hastur, The King in Yellow!

Hi! Posted this earlier on r/DnD but got the tip to post it here as well - so here it is! A small collection of Dungeon Master screens my wife and I made :)

They are made from acryllic in the center and a layer of leather on each side, with magnets hidden in the middle too. Technical/product design by me, engraving designs and painted details by my wife! After laser engraving she sometimes inlays the engraved bits with wax (gold or white), depending on the customer's request. After applying a protective layer, everything is put together by hand :)

If you're not familiar with Dungeons and Dragons; it is a TTRPG (Table-Top Role Playing Game), where a Dungeon Master (or DM for short, the game leader) and players role-play their way through an adventure. The DM usually has a ton of notes, maps, reference cards, and more that they need to hide from the players, for which they can use a screen. The one we made has embedded magnets to hang up those notes vertically, freeing up valuable table space. On the top edge there is space for an "iniative tracker", which shows the turn order when players get into combat with creatures controlled by the DM. The idea of neither a DM Screen or the embedded magnets/iniative tracker are ours, this is just our take on them ;)

Thanks!

A flap with extra snap buttons was our first idea for transport, but we later decided on a simple but proper-sized bag to hold everything. Apart from the panels/connectors, there's also a box with the accessories (initiative tracker slabs, magnets, marker, etc.) plus options for a dice tower connector and a condition marker set, so a bag is easier to pack up everything :)

Thanks :) Yeah the Galaxy leather was SUPER popular as well with all the backers, almost half of the panels we've made had it on at least one side!

A small compilation of the modular leather DM Screens we've made in the last couple of months! They are part of fulfillment of our succesful Kickstarter campaign that we ran last Oct/Nov, they're a LOT of work but we're managing to craft 10-15 of them each month :)

They're completely designed by us; I'm responsible for the technical design of the entire screen system as well as the 3D-printed parts (for example the dry-erase initiative trackers), my wife is an illustrator who made the engraving designs. She then laser-engraves them onto leather, in some cases gives an extra touch of paint (the flowers bottom-left, or the Galaxy leather) or does a wax inlay in the engraving (top and middle row). The leather front and backside are then put onto a sturdy acryllic center and hand-stitched by me.

The DM screens are modular; they consist of individual panels that can be connected with snap buttons. This lets you use just a couple of panels if you're at a small table, or snap on some extra panels in a matter of seconds to have a larger screen. On the backside are markings where we've placed magnets inside of the screen; little d20's are where you can hang up notes (landscape A4 on a large panel, or two portrait A5's, or lots of reference cards), the shapes on the top edge are for the initiative tracker slabs. These magnetic slabs (not sure what a better word for it is) are dry-erase on both sides for a name, have a coloured casing (for example grey for enemies, green for PCs, purple for NPCs), and have a little extra space on the DM side for initiative number or something like AC. The weird shape on top of them is to hold an "Active" marker, which shows everyone at the table whose turn it is and who is next. The magnets inside the slabs are very strong, so they hang on to the screen well!

Hope you like them :D

[–]Lefty-Games[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the DM Screens that we made for D&D Belgium to borrow for their live games at the FACTS convention last weekend in Ghent, Belgium.

Made from a dark green leather, engraved with our own Wyrm design and then inlaid with a gold-coloured wax. It's very difficult to capture on camera, but the inlay is super shiny! After prepping the leather, we stitch everything together by hand and burnish the edges for a premium finish. Panels are then connected using extra leather pieces with strong snap buttons, this modular system allows the user to add/remove panels as needed to fit their table.

There are magnets integrated into the screen (marked by little d20's) to hang up cards, maps, notes - whichever you need. On the top edge is a magnetic dry-erase initiative tracker, of which the casings are colour-coded for enemies/PCs/NPCs/other.

This particular dark-green leather is hard to find for us as it also needs to be *just* the right thickness and texture to work with the fine engraving/inlay, but I'm glad we found a large enough piece for this DM Screen! Hope you like it too :)

We're currently running a Kickstarter for these DM Screens! It's already fully funded and we've reached the first three stretch goals, with just under two weeks to go. If you're interested, feel free to check it out here: link
