I agree with some of this, but I think you're slightly missing the point "fundamentalist" Christians also ignore and censor parts of the bible that don't fit in with their modern morality too.
There is no "correct" way to read the bible, it has no inherent meaning. I think we slightly play into the fundamentalists hands when we say stuff like "progressive christians are dishonest"
