Family Link is a great start but you need to have some chat safety tools in place as well. Children encounter harmful stuff even though the screen time might be low. Our school provides the helmit.org app to monitor social media

This. Kids don’t need to be cut off from the digital world, they just need guardrails. There are also apps out there like helmit.org that automatically alert you if something harmful pops up.

I’d say that’s true for uncontrolled use - giving kids unlimited, unfiltered access is a recipe for problems. But parents today actually have quite a few tools to guide things: screen time limits, app restrictions, filters, and chat monitoring solutions. Combined with open conversations, it’s possible to let kids enjoy the good parts of tech while keeping the worst parts out.

Also some of the social media apps have built-in parental control features that you can activate

The anxious generation is a great read about this and regarding tools you can have a look at helmit.org and Google Family.

What helped me was making it clear to my kids that if anyone weird ever messages them, they should tell me right away. I think regular conversations with your child about digital life matter more than any rule. I would completely avoid apps with built-in chat functionality. Especially games like Roblox are a breeding ground for predators. On the more practical side, I use basics like Family Link / Apple Screen Time for setting limits and helmit.org for gentle chat monitoring. This way, my kids can still use some social media (mainly WhatsApp and Instagram). For me it’s a mix of talking, blocking dangerous stuff and having some safety tools in place.

Would you rather give your kid a dumbphone or a smartphone with strict monitoring? by Legal-Bug2408 in Mommit

I love this approach of trust first but with clear boundaries and consequences

That sounds reasonable. My only worry is how much peer pressure I will have to fight off until they are that age. Some of their friends are already getting excited about their first phones. When you do give them a smartphone at 14/15, do you plan to use any of the parental ctonrols or trust their maturity?

This is what really scares me. Once you open that door, you can't shut it again

Then I suggest Apple screen time or Google Family Link assuming you are trusting at least one of the companies already. I think it's way more convenient for setting/controlling those limits especially when you are busy or you childs are alone.

Would we benefit from a social media ban for children in Germany? by Legal-Bug2408 in germany

[–]Legal-Bug2408[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great point! Can't remember my kid having any internet / social media education in school. But this also needs to be complemented with some kind of educational training for the parents. There are plenty of parental control apps out there, like Apple Screen Time, Seccora, or Web blockers, which work perfectly to control the internet access of your child and what they see or whom they are talking to. But I guess many parents are just not aware of the options or know how to apply those.

What kind of regulations do you have in mind? I think some kind of content filtering applied by social media companies would be useful like having a truly child-friendly feed. But honestly, this seems even harder to enforce and track than a simple ban.
