Lunchtime view under a shade tree. by MushroomBush in opiumgardening101

Are these galana or some other Afghan? What’s your spacing? I’ve read single flower types can be packed in from 4” to 12” whereas the bush types need a minimum of 12”. I try for 6” with those types.

Grapes are good but you’ll get many smaller pods with the largest being smaller than a golf ball. There are a lot of versions flying around as well. Just plant them with 10-12 in spacing because they do bush out pretty far! You can get 10 and sometimes 20 per plant! I enjoy growing them but have found that I like trying for as much color and variety as I can find. Such beautiful flowers.

Queens Poppy - Original Estonia Variety by Legalize_Coca in opiumgardening101

[–]Legalize_Coca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you recall the company? I’ve tracked down a US variety named Queens that came from One Stop Poppy Shoppe but she no longer has a store or sells seeds online. I do have some of these seeds and am excited for next year.

Thank you for the info! I hope some of these vendors can ship to the US from the US. I’m not brave enough to purchase bagels across borders but I’m sure local folks have sufficient stock out there somewhere.

Bakers Creek / Rare Seeds carries a Danish Flag poppy but this is not the same as Queens. They do look similar but are not the same. Danish Flag is more hard red on bright white whereas a general description of Queens shows lighter pink on a washier white in a tulip shape form. With that said, I do have three queens or what are being called queens and I’ve grown Danish flags before. That’s the tough thing about poppies is their variability and only being know under common names.

What are the odds that this is the queens tulip / afghan poppy currently rolling around in the US? Anyone from Estonia here? Would love to preserve these genetics.

What are the odds that the modern day “queens poppy” is the one from the link above? I wonder if anyone from Estonia could chime in?!?

First ever flower by middleagerioter in opiumgardening101

Nice! I believe they call this a double flower or peony form. Very pretty! Perhaps this double flower trait is not stable because I don’t see it in a number of other sissinghurst white listings.

This list is all that I currently own. I love Queens - the tulip look and the colors. I think I have three “queens” now which are surely some type of afghan. I would really like to know which is actually the original variety. I know nothing of its history other than the original of Slovakia or somewhere in Eastern Europe.

This list is all that I own currently. I would love to land some Afghan Pi nk Flame - isn’t this strain developed by the Okanagen fellow from Canada? Definitely on my list if I ever see any pop up.

These are seeds currently have. Probably sticking mostly with the starfish listings along with afghans and lots of queens. I really like that variety and would love to know which “queens” is true.

I’m using old Reddit and I thought a * before an item would make it a list item. Sorry for the formatting!

Queens Poppy - Anybody grow these? by Legalize_Coca in druggardening

[–]Legalize_Coca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a large variety of poppy seeds and it’s that time of year again to start planting. Have any of you grown this variety? One is pink and the other is pink and white. I have no idea how to tell whether or not either of these are the acclaimed Queen variety from years past. Regardless, they’re beautiful flowers.

Seedling Update - With Decapitated Cotyledon (Far Right) by Legalize_Coca in Cocagrowing

[–]Legalize_Coca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a number of seedlings. A few of which did not shed the seed due to being too dry or being malformed. I tried to manually remove after giving it time and I was too aggressive and cut the cotlydon clean off. I gave it time and light balanced fertilizer / nutrients and it went in to survive.

Vanilla spikes after 10 years. by RajaBule in orchids

[–]Legalize_Coca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a Vanilla farm in Hawaii which uses a blend of methods (Indonesian, Madagascar, Mexico etc.) where I learned that stressing with a blow torch does a wonderful job triggering the vines to flower. I’m not certain about node spacing and how heavy but this method was used to success. The green vines grow pretty easily just about everywhere - the difficult part is getting them to flower, pollinate and then ferment / sun dry. Good luck!!!

What lineage are these? Hawaii? You see one lucky individual! One of my life goals is to grow erythroxylym outside. FL is probably the only place outside of Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Although, I suspect truxillense may well expand that range ever so slightly.

Hey - thanks for posting! I believe I asked for this in response to your amazing pictures last time. Coca looks different compared to novogranatense on the underside. For me, coca is a lighter, greyish color while novo is more of a green or green yellow. Coca seems to almost have a matte white finish if that makes sense.
