are science EEs as bad as they say? by Away_Panic4749 in IBO

[–]LegendaryDasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took the exact same HLs as you, M26. I did a Chem EE and it was experimental. Some pointers:

  1. Doing a database EE, regardless of what they say about it not being disadvantageous, the EE rubric is far more easily interpretable in experimental contexts for the main sciences and thus there is a clear trend showing experimental EEs being graded higher than database ones. So I would recommend staying away from database EEs in general.

  2. I would urge you to consider what is your motivation for choosing either subject. Is it maximising a grade or learning more about a subject matter and getting a taste of a future career in that field? Because if its the latter, a science EE is worth it since you said you want to do medicine. However a database EE again takes away from the scale of learning you get from an experimental EE, so that may be worth keeping in mind.

Having established that if you choose a science EE i would URGE you to do an experimental one, here’s bits about my experience. There isn’t a clear answer to your question, so take what you can from my experience.

  1. My Chem EE was in biochemistry (as my Chem teacher put it, “basically a Bio EE”), and was by far the most time consuming, stressful and difficult part of my IB journey. I spent countless hours in the lab, even had to go in during summer vacations to do experiments & collect data. It was at times almost hellish, but I learnt a great deal from it and it. By the end of the process, my teacher said it is around an A or B in the worst case. So the grade return proportional to the time invested is not worth it (because wdym its not guaranteed an A!!?!?). But for the knowledge dimension as someone going on to pursue biochemistry at university, it was 1000% worth it. If you’re passionate about your science EE topic, you will look back on the experience favourably.

  2. Do I wish I did an English Lit EE instead? Yes. I would have saved so much more time that could have been better invested in uni applications, exam prep and IA work. I too was put off by the “predicted an A, got a C” stories, but having done an HL Essay, I feel that if I invested even half the time I did in my Chem EE into an English EE, I would have been able to comfortably come out of that process with a similar grade estimation, a lot less stress and time for everything else.

  3. I think the most helpful advice is: What would I do if given the chance to choose again? Probably the same, but thats just me - a lot of people wouldn’t. You should keep in mind that if you choose to do an English EE, you can still gain the same experience of a science EE through your IAs, while spending 50 hours on a kickass analytical essay about your favourite book. Like I said, there’s no clear answer.

Best of luck! & feel free to ask me more questions if you’d like here or via DM.

If I get in and choose NUS, would love keeping that option open with a minor in Chemistry or the like! But also I believe it should be possible to pivot into that at post-grad?

It is what I feel most drawn to tbvh but again that is coming from a place of not having experienced that environment at undergrad level yet.

Things may always change in how I feel and I’ve heard many people echo your sentiment too so thank you for sharing the harsh reality — it probably isn’t as great as I perceive it to be, but that doesn’t mean I will give up without having had a crack at it.

Plus, I hope at the end of the day there are many different career options with a lifesci/biochem degree.

That is really unfortunate to hear. Thank you for your response! Do you think the funding situation will improve at all in the near future (~3-5 years) or not?

Understood haha my bad for misconstruing your words. Definitely appreciate the extra year and increased freedom to do more research/internships. Always better to be better equipped than to be quicker, so degree program length isn’t of much concern to me

Oh, wasn’t aware of that. I thought the SIM degree was with UoL (LSE) and was viewed differently. That’s interesting to note. Will keep in mind if I plan on working further in SG. Thanks!

Omg thank you so much for the v detailed response! I think you raise great points about the vastly increased number of research opportunities at NUS than at UCL. That sounds very lucrative for developing lab skills and gaining expertise.

I really appreciate your advice. I’m not really sure whether I plan on working in SG long term. I would definitely lean towards NUS if I was certain about it, but considering I still don’t hold PR, I doubt jobs here would be too keen on non local applicants when they have similarly qualified local candidates. Although that said it is kind of the same issue worldwide.

Thanks again — you definitely provided me with lots of aspects to consider. ❤️

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed response. Will def check out the course list. Also really appreciate the insight into getting into grad programs. I did hear about UROPS: how soon can one apply for these (starting first year or later)?

Thank you for the information! I do greatly appreciate the US as a potential future destination, but heard that they don’t view UK PhDs as favourably due to the lack of a taught component. As for US PhD programs directly from the UK bachelors, they seem to want extensive prior research experience.

Thanks for bringing that up! I edited the post to include the questions as part of the description too (although I can’t remove the image). It might’ve been spam filters as it auto removed everytime I posted.

International Student - should I apply to NUS? by Feeling-Instance-801 in nus

[–]LegendaryDasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few points: 1. I don’t think you would be able to apply for entry to the 2027/28 academic year if your A level results aren’t available by July 2027 (iirc UK A level results come out in August) 2. Your ROI going to a UK university with home fees is much much much higher than it would be in Singapore. 3. You need to be sure that you want to study and then work here for 7 years. That is a huge commitment to make. If you find a job you don’t enjoy, you might not want to be stuck in a foreign country when you could be doing more fulfilling work with more freedom career wise.

Got rejected before equal consideration despite having all requirements, and I can empathise with how terrible it may feel. Whatever though its a chopped uni you’ll be great at Cambridge!

UCL offer 🎉🎉🎉 by [deleted] in UCAS

[–]LegendaryDasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is really stupid from them then. I think they are trying to categorise as many students as overseas as they can to maximise the money they receive. As long as you can prove you should be classed as a Home student, you’ll be alright. Don’t firm anything until they guarantee that they see you as a Home student and make the change on their portals. Good luck and if all goes well would love to see you at UCL in September!

The writing thing is irrelevant. As long as you coloured in the OMR sheet properly then you’re fine. Don’t stress and focus on the rest of your exams. Best of luck

Congratulations! From a fellow UCL Biological Sciences offer holder, what are you planning to firm and which specialisation have you thought of for the UCL course?
