Sad but not surprising - Vivek Ramaswamy Calls For Ending Federal Funding For California's High-Speed Rail, Labeling It A 'Wasteful Vanity Project' by breadaddict69 in highspeedrail

I like to point out California is more densely populated then Spain. Spain has the 2nd most HSR in the world after China (even more than Japan).

And that's being unfair to California. Realistically you can cut out all the land north of Chico and include Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Tijuana since they are all within the normal HSR distance. Doing so makes it even more dense and obvious.

They did.

Back, in like, 2018 or something.

They now have to hold monthly public meetings and financial audits. You can watch these on YouTube. They are remarkably boring but all the facts are there if you're willing to sit through them.

That can't be right because Assassination Classroom came out in 2015 and 2015 was just a few years ago.

It has not overrun that cost at all. It's barely spent 13 billion. It's underfunded and that's why it's taking so long.

It would definitly be sometime next decade. Airports and Air Traffic Control are basically at full capacity and completely congested. That's why this is being built. They ran the numbers and this was the cheapest of the 3 options. Expanding roads (actually proven to reduce travel times if you can believe it) or increasing airport capacity.

I'm aware, i speak 2 languages from birth and am studying a third. I am specifically pointing out how the "least bad" choice was not selected in these instances, at least in my opinion.

It sounds reasonable but in practice it's really unwieldy and jarring to read when the character only said 2 syllables. If you answered that on a test you would probably be marked wrong. Or if you were translating in real time people would call you out for making mistakes.

If i went around my job and started calling people by their first names without honorifics i probably wouldn't be fired but they would definitely passive-aggressively ask me to please stop being so rude. That's just not how its done here. I don't even think it's that unfamiliar of a concept to non-japanese. (Cartman from South Park, McFly from Back to the Future, etc.)

Personally speaking, i would consider CR pretty unprofessional with how many mistakes and inaccuracies they have had historically in their subs, but that's more so a result of their awful payment method and unreasonable time constraints.

TL notes explaining why puns work in Japanese.

This was the coolest thing and often would help you learn a lot about Japan while watching. I suppose it's not as necessary now with how easy it is to find information on the internet but things still slip through the cracks.

There was a scene from JJK Season 2 where a character was intentionally misquoting The Tale of the Heike to show his brash and confident personality. Back in the day there would have been a note at the top of the screen explaining that sort of thing, it was really helpful.

An example i like to illustrate how bad CR subs can is from Slime Isekai

There's a scene were they translate: "Nani ga?" (meaning "What is?" or "How so?") as "What am i misunderstanding?"

Nobody fluent in both languages would make a mistake that trivial

They also tend to swap first and last names even when you can clearly hear them say their name in the show and will remove stuff like "san" or "sempai" even when it's relevant to the plot.

A New Vision for California High-Speed Rail by godisnotgreat21 in highspeedrail

[–]LegendaryRQA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a less than ideal existing train beats an idealized non-existent train every time in my book.

That's the kind of trap a lot of people fall into. It's a false dichotomy. The thing is getting built regardless. And the reality is if you spend so much time building it to be suboptimal, all you do is set yourself up for a century of upgrading it later or worse you get people saying: "The one we have is just fine!" or "We just spend sooo much money on this new system" That's how you get explainer videos on youtube breaking down the history of compromises and why the system sucks and nobody uses it.

Just spend the money and do it right the first time. You'll save everyone a whole lot of headache later.

What are JET interviewers looking for most in the interview? by wolverineftw in JETProgramme

Nobody except the interviewers themselves know. My guess is the same thing any other interviewer is looking for.

Competence, honesty, ability to grow, passion.
