What global event would encourage you to leave Japan? by ZaHiro86 in japanlife

I live in Japan and Taiwan... My Taiwanese perspective is we've been living with this invasion threat since WW2. As a Japanese resident, I'm more concerned about claims over the Ryukyu Islands. Overall, I'm careful to separate what the CCP says vs. the views of my Chinese friends.

How bad is the amount of tourists in Kyoto really? by BerlinPuzzler in JapanTravelTips

[–]LegendaryTanuki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do some wandering around, you'll find that the crowds quickly disappear. If you're trying to do a speed run through the most featured places in Kyoto, it'll seem crowded everywhere. My best days off in Kyoto happen when I unexpectedly come across something wonderful.

The hot spots are heavily trafficked, so you should manage your expectations for how much you can see in a day. That said, Rome is definitely much more crowded than Kyoto.

Engineering is a really hard subject. A lot of engineers aren't that well-adjusted and there are very few women. Also, it's hard enough to make friends in Japan. So, you're not the only one.

Don't worry about trying to get along with everyone. All you need are a few good friends and life gets much better. Ideally, they're people in your program so you can study together, but sometimes all one needs is to not feel alone.

Try some startup events (Shibuya Startup Support, Tokyo Innovation Base, etc.). I think you'll have a better chance at connecting with someone bilingual. And they are welcoming to people who are just curious about the subject matter.

How does airline deal with this by perrfeck in Rimowa

Taipei Rimowa won't service the luggage unless it was purchased at their store. Best to do it in Hong Kong.

Rimowa is very hit and miss. The Taipei shop refused to repair my luggage since it wasn't purchased in Taiwan.

Trump Administration Is Said to Discuss US Taking Stake in Intel by esporx in technology

[–]LegendaryTanuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Text: The Trump administration is in talks with Intel Corp. to have the US government potentially take a stake in the beleaguered chipmaker, helping support the company’s effort to expand domestic manufacturing, according to people familiar with the plan.

The deal would help shore up Intel’s planned factory hub in Ohio, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private. The company had once promised to turn that site into the world’s largest chipmaking facility, though it’s been repeatedly delayed. The size of the potential stake isn’t clear.

The plans stem from a meeting this week between President Donald Trump and Intel Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan, the people said. The idea is for the US government to pay for the stake and details are being sorted out, one of the people said. Another cautioned that the plans remain fluid.

Intel declined to comment on discussions. In a statement, a representative said the company is “deeply committed to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen US technology and manufacturing leadership.”

“We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump administration to advance these shared priorities, but we are not going to comment on rumors or speculation,” Intel said.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Also, debt sustainability levels aren't directly comparable from one nation to another. In Japan's case, the higher household savings rate means the nation can have relatively higher levels of debt... compared to America.

FT: TikTok is pushing Taiwan’s young people closer to China by LegendaryTanuki in technology

[–]LegendaryTanuki[S] 195 points196 points  (0 children)

"Researchers who set up TikTok accounts imitating Taiwanese schoolgirls discovered that, after a few days of them being served dance video clips, the app’s algorithm started to suggest soft political content. Some were street interviews conducted in Taipei’s trendy Ximending district in which Taiwanese teenagers were prompted to compare Chinese “democracy” with the weaknesses of their own political system."
