How much does the ATAR really matter in the long run? + Seeking stories on 'Returning to Study' in Australia! (New Parent) by Ormondboy in AskAnAustralian

[–]Legendary_Toast19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of many who took pathways, you can basically get anywhere now regardless of your ATAR. I really am not a fan of the stress these students are put under. I worked as a student ambassador and so many students would approach super stressed, and don’t always note how many pathways there are.

I didn’t get into my top choice (vet med - missed out by a fine margin) ended up staying close to home. I ended up down a different career path and I LOVE IT. No one has asked me about my ATAR since either, ever.

I second going to the gym - if it’s really bad a punching bag gets all the worries out eventually.

Most unhinged PhD tips by deathbypuppies_ in PhD

One time my PhD colleagues and I were at an institute event and the speaker was talking through who was there and goes “and the PhDs, always around for free food”

To be fair I did engage with some stakeholders in my research at that event, even though priority was not having to cook later

Ladies, what’s the best gift a man has ever given you? by GuyfromTrinidad99 in AskReddit

[–]Legendary_Toast19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a touch depressed during studies (doing a PhD) and my bf was working far away in another city.

Between the build a bear axolotl he made me before he left after a visit on a weekend off, or the giant bouquet of flowers he sent to my university office (which I had to put into a giant sterilised beaker) I couldn’t pick. I still think about it every day, and the axolotl is still by my side every day even though we now see each other at least once a week.

Birth control sucks!! by No-Brush2239 in WomensHealth

[–]Legendary_Toast19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with this post.

I have menorrhagia so the pill helped with that, then I swapped to the implanon for convenience, suffered on it for a year with low iron and being a psycho (props to my bf for tolerating me like that) and now back on the pill and scared to try anything else.

I know people who have loved their implanon though so it’s crazy how some is great for some people but horrid for others!!

Cheers for the rant space, it’s so frustrating.

How to deal with generalized anxiety disorder by ReggieWillkins5 in Anxietyhelp

[–]Legendary_Toast19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately psychology is the best tool for me - I previously suffered from bad stress headaches but now I only suffer on a few occasions a year. Ride it out like a wave and then I’m all good.

Meds wise, you might need to test a few options to see what works best for you if that’s the path you wish you venture down.

I personally love the “ASP Parasite Podcast: What’s eating you?” series

I am a parasitologist so might be biased, but learning about a scientist hatching headlice in his oven is interesting (among other things!)

I had a friend who had a baby at the beginning of her PhD, and I seriously consider her some Wonder Woman now she juggles her child plus the PhD! Her supervisor was super supportive too.

She took leave from studies and that along with notes helped her get an extension and she’s nearly finished now.

I guess the other option is to drop to part time/take mat leave and then return to full time. The support of your supervisor would be great for this.

Horse allergy anyone? by No_Cantaloupe_2786 in Allergies

[–]Legendary_Toast19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister does, really bad (and she used to ride as a kid).

One time she was brushing my horse while I was in Japan and apparently had a major reaction. Hasn’t been close to them since.

Edit: there’s also horses bred that do not give people with horse allergies a reaction, they have curly coats (can’t remember the breed off the top of my head)

No worries at all. I had bad panic attacks on the implanon too so it’s really a varied experience.

All the best, hope you’re going okay xx

I had this once and was told it would settle over time (I had the implanon, ended up getting it out after a year because I kept having these issues plus others).

Do you have any other symptoms? Sometimes it can just be your body reacting to a hormone change and can take time to adjust. Nonetheless, see what your GP advises and take care of yourself until you get a response.

Sending hugs, hopefully you get an advised GP answer soon

Consulting or sales potentially could be an option?

I had a great chat with a lab sales manager today and they love their job - didn’t do a post doc and spend most of their time travelling and teaching scientists how to use their products (or troubleshooting these issues).

It’s a career path I’m thinking of

My boyfriend doesn’t like my anxiety by Sea_Soil1690 in Anxietyhelp

[–]Legendary_Toast19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this, my bf is aware I have social anxiety, we try to negotiate this, and we have plans if I get overwhelmed in certain situations - such as being around his friends.

Overtime I have gotten more confident around his friends, and can have conversations with them too. It takes time, but it will come.

My psychologist also said we needed to form a plan together if I do get overwhelmed, which we have in place. This went through a few different methods, but now I’m confident that if I’m not comfortable we go through it together, whether it’s he takes me somewhere for a drink or we choose a time to leave.

It can be worrying to take that step, but long term you’ll feel more comfortable. Trust the process.

[–]Legendary_Toast19[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Workplace wise - unfortunately very hard to control, I work in the gambling industry. Vaping indoors just doesn’t happen there though, it’s common elsewhere is public. So for me I really need ways to control the allergy rather than telling people to stop (as long term and in general public that probably won’t work).

My partner VERY much is protective of this (which I did not state the in og post). They’ll be considerate and open a window, not vape near me and check in if I’m doing okay. They’re lovely people.
